Former SEC head coach set to take over at UNLV, reports say

Dan Mullen is set to become the new head football coach at UNLV, according to multiple reports Thursday.

The 52-year-old Mullen has been out of coaching since 2021, when he was fired after four seasons at Florida. He has worked the last three years as a college football analyst for ESPN and the SEC Network.

Mullen — who has a 103-61 record in 13 seasons at Mississippi State and Florida — would replace Barry Odom, himself a former SEC head coach. Odom left UNLV last weekend after two seasons to take the head-coaching job at Purdue.

Mullen had his most-sustained success at Mississippi State, whom he coached to a 69-46 record and five bowl wins from 2009-17. He then jumped to Florida, where he went 29-9 in his first three seasons — including an SEC East championship in 2020 — before things unraveled quickly in 2021.

In addition to his head-coaching stints, Mullen also worked on Urban Meyer’s staffs at Bowling Green, Utah and Florida. He was offensive coordinator when the Gators won BCS national championships in both 2006 and 2008.

UNLV is 10-3 this season, having lost last Saturday to Boise State in the Mountain West championship game. The Rebels will face California in the Art of Sport LA Bowl in Inglewood, Calif., on Wednesday.
