This small town has the tallest Christmas tree in Alabama

The city of Opelika recently unveiled its new Christmas tree, which garnered the title of Alabama’s tallest Christmas tree.

Standing at 72 feet tall, the massive tree has 1058 individual branches, 4,232 ornaments and more than 105,000 lights stretching six miles. It’s also only two feet shy of being as tall as the Christmas tree on display in at Rockefeller Center in New York City this year.

Leigh Krehling, Opelika’s community relations officer who helped lead the project, said that the towering Christmas tree has been in the works for more than five years and will be on display through the first week in January at Courthouse Square.

“We knew we needed a destination piece that would bring people into town,” said Krehling. “I would definitely say that our goal was to have the largest tree in the state and, really, probably within a 50-mile radius even over into Georgia. I think that it’s really going to set us apart.”

The tree, which weighs nearly 18,000 pounds and took a week to be installed by more than 70 volunteers, was lit for the first time during the “Snopelika” event, and Krehling said it was an emotional moment for herself and her team.

“It was breathtaking,” said Krehling. “I actually had to hold myself back from tears Friday night, just watching everybody’s reaction. It made my day. I mean, it really kind of made my year, you know. Just to see the kids and adults alike there, it was priceless.”

The tree is on display at Courthouse Square, located at 215 South 8th Street.
