Jasper man dies of injuries sustained in Fayette County wreck that left unrestrained toddler dead

A Jasper man severely injured in a single-vehicle wreck Sunday in Fayette County that left an unrestrained 2-year-old child dead has died of his injuries, authorities said Wednesday.

Steven B. Collins, 40, was pronounced dead Monday, said Alabama Law Enforcement Agency Senior Trooper Brandon Bailey.

Collins was driving a Toyota Tacoma at 10:24 a.m. Sunday on Fayette County 73 near Morris Cemetery Road when the vehicle left the road and hit a tree, authorities said.

The unrestrained toddler was pronounced dead on the scene of the wreck, about two miles south of Glen Allen.

Collins, who was not wearing a seat belt at the time of the wreck, was ejected from the Tacoma and taken by ambulance to UAB Hospital in Birmingham.

Bailey said he did not have any information on whether Collins and the toddler were related.

Another passenger, 22-year-old Wendy Bailey, was airlifted to UAB with undisclosed injuries.

She, too, was not wearing a seat belt, according to authorities.
