Leeds man charged in 75-year-old father’s killing showed no ‘remorse or heartbreak,’ police chief said

A man has been charged in the shooting death of his 75-year-old father at the family’s Leeds home.

Dventa Marchris Smith, 28, is charged with murder in the Tuesday slaying of Christopher Lee Smith.

Leeds police officers responded at 6:30 a.m. to a residence in the 8200 block of Jackson Avenue on a person shot. Police Chief Paul Irwin said a witness inside the home made the 911 call.

When police arrived on the scene, they found the elder Smith dead from gunshot wounds.

The younger Smith was taken into custody at the scene.

Jacksonville State University Center for Applied Science responded to process the crime scene. The Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives also assisted in the investigation.

Dventa Smith was held overnight and booked into the Jefferson County Jail at 2:02 p.m. Wednesday. He is being held without bond.

“This is a difficult time for the family and friends of Mr. Smith,’’ Irwin said. “Domestic violence once again has taken the life of someone when an alternative solution could have been taken.”

“It is unbelievable the lack of remorse or heartbreak of someone who has just murdered their father,’’ the chief said.

“We are very upset that this has occurred and are very sad for the family and community,’’ Irwin said. “It is apparent that many people in our community love Mr. Smith.”

Smith’s slaying is the city’s first in 2024. In all of Jefferson County, there have been 187 homicides, including the one in Leeds.
