Alabama jazz icon gets a shout out on ‘The Simpsons’

This weekend, Birmingham-born jazz musician Sun Ra was briefly featured in an episode of “The Simpsons.”

In the episode, titled “Convenience Airways,” sister Lisa attempts to entertain baby Maggie with her ‘Jazz Legends: A to Z’ flashcards.

When she gets to S, Lisa holds up a card with a picture of Sun Ra, birth name Herman Poole Blount.

“S is for Sun Ra,” Lisa said.

“He’s a little abstract, but when you get it, you’ll really get it.”

Lisa then plays Maggie a Sun Ra styled piece, but the younger Simpson, who appears to lack her sister’s interest, starts crying.

Blount died in 1993, less than four years after “The Simpsons” aired. He is considered to be the godfather of Afrofuturism.

His band Arkestra, which continued to tour after his death, was nominated for its first Grammy award in 2021.
