Georgia’s Carson Beck likely to miss Sugar Bowl with elbow injury, report says

Georgia quarterback Carson Beck could miss the Sugar Bowl with a ligament injury in his throwing elbow suffered during the SEC championship game, according to a report Monday by Atlanta’s WSB-TV.

Beck was injured when his right arm bent back awkwardly as he was being sacked on the final play of the first half of the Bulldogs’ 22-19 win over Texas in Atlanta, with backup Gunner Stockton playing the entire second half. After Stockton’s helmet was knocked off after a hard hit during overtime, Beck — who was seen on the bench with ice on his elbow during the fourth quarter — came back in for one play and handed off to Trevor Etienne, who scored the game-ending touchdown on a 4-yard run.

Georgia (11-2) has a first-round bye in the College Football Playoff, and will face the winner of the Dec. 20 game between Indiana and Notre Dame in the Sugar Bowl CFP quarterfinal on New Year’s Day. Bulldogs head coach Kirby Smart said Sunday during ESPN’s College Football Playoff Selection Show that the team was still awaiting the result of Beck’s MRI.

“I’m still trying to get that knowledge myself. He did get to have an MRI this morning. We should get the results here in the next few hours,” Smart said. “We just had a team meeting. He was there for the team meeting, but we don’t know much more than we knew (Saturday) night as of right now. We should be finding something out here soon.”

Beck, a senior from Jacksonville, Fla., has started every game for the Bulldogs the last two seasons. He has thrown for 3,485 yards and 28 touchdowns in 13 games in 2024.

With Beck likely out, Georgia would turn again to Stockton, a redshirt sophomore who had played in only two games this season prior to Saturday. Against Texas, he completed 12 of 16 passes for 71 yards with an interception in leading the Bulldogs back from a 6-3 halftime deficit to win their second SEC championship in three years.
