Auburn NFL roundup: Jamien Sherwood piles up 18 tackles for Jets

With his mentor, C.J. Mosley, bedeviled by injuries this season, Jamien Sherwood has stepped into the middle of the New York defense and taken on the mantle of the Jets’ top tackler.

The former Auburn safety entered Sunday’s game against the Miami Dolphins with 107 tackles in 12 games, then reached a career high with 18 more.

But Sherwood’s stats didn’t keep New York from falling to Miami 32-26 in overtime.

Sherwood had two tackles for loss, including taking down running back De’Von Achane 3 yards behind the line of scrimmage on a third-and-goal snap at the Jets 1-yard line. But on the next play, the Dolphins scored on a fourth-down touchdown pass to tie the game in the fourth quarter.

Sherwood also had a pass breakup in the game.

Only one NFL player has had more than 18 tackles in a game this season – Indianapolis Colts linebacker Grant Stuard with 19 in a 16-10 victory over Miami on Oct. 20. Sherwood is the second player with 18 tackles in a game in 2024, joining Baltimore Ravens linebacker Roquan Smith. Sherwood also has one of the three 2024 games in which a defender has had 17 tackles, which he did in a 31-6 loss to the Arizona Cardinals on Nov. 10.

The Jets placed Mosley on injured reserve on Saturday, so it appears Sherwood is going to complete the season playing full-time as New York’s middle linebacker.

Sherwood was among the 14 former Auburn players who got on the field on the 14th Sunday of the NFL’s 105th season.

Two other former Auburn players were involved in the New York-Miami game:

  • Jets kicker Anders Carlson made his four field-goal attempts from 28, 30, 40 and 42 yards – the latter with 52 seconds left in the fourth quarter to give New York a 26-23 lead – and two extra points. It was the first four-field-goal game for Carlson.
  • Dolphins wide receiver Anthony Schwartz is on injured reserve and not eligible to play.
