Alabama NFL roundup: DeVonta Smith returns with big catches for Eagles
After missing two games because of hamstring injury, Philadelphia Eagles wide receiver DeVonta Smith returned on Sunday with modest numbers — four receptions for 37 yards.
But considering the Eagles had only 108 passing yards and Smith had the longest reception for Philadelphia and a touchdown catch, his contributions made a difference in the Eagles’ 22-16 victory over the Carolina Panthers.
Smith caught a 4-yard touchdown pass from quarterback Jalen Hurts as the Eagles took a 14-10 lead with 14 seconds left in the first half.
Earlier in the second quarter, Smith got loose for a 27-yard gain on a third-and-8 reception to advance Philadelphia to the Carolina 8-yard line. Three snaps later, Hurts plunged into the end zone from 1 yard out for the game’s first touchdown.
Philadelphia ran its winning streak to nine games and clinched a postseason berth with the victory. The Eagles have been to the playoffs every season since Smith joined the team as a first-round pick in the 2021 NFL Draft.
Smith was among the 34 former Alabama players who got on the field on the 14th Sunday of the NFL’s 105th season.
Eight other former Alabama players were involved in the Carolina-Philadelphia game:
Landon Dickerson started at left guard for the Eagles.
Jalen Hurts started at cornerback for the Eagles. Hurts completed 14-of-21 passes for 108 yards with two touchdowns and no interceptions and ran eight times for 59 yards and one touchdown. Hurts scored on a 1-yard run with 11:48 left in the first half and threw touchdown passes of 4 yards to wide receiver Devonta Smith with 14 seconds left in the first half and 4 yards to tight end Grant Calcaterra with 13:45 left in the game.
