SMU or Alabama in CFP? What they’re saying after Clemson wins ACC
The College Football Playoff Selection Show, set for Sunday, just got a bit more interesting.
Cade Klubnik threw for 262 yards and four touchdowns, Nolan Hauser kicked 56-yard field goal as time expired and the No. 18 Clemson knocked off league unbeaten and No. 8 SMU 34-31 Saturday night in the ACC championship to earn a spot in the College Football Playoff and position itself for a first-round bye.
The scenario could keep No. 12 Alabama out of the playoffs.
SMU rallied from a 24-7 deficit creating an outcome which leaves both the Mustangs and Tide waiting on the committee.
Others were quick to voice their opinion on the matter.
“I go back to what Dabo Swinney said, and I would say this directly to the people on that committe who are watching this tonight,” ABC’s Sean McDonough said after the game. “If you watched that game and don’t think that SMU team deserves to be in the College Football playoff, then I would respectfully, strongly disagree with you.”
Swinney, the Clemson coach, said, “What a game. Listen, that’s a playoff football team. SMU, they better be in the dang playoffs. What a comeback.”
Greg McElroy, a former Alabama quarterback and SEC Network analyst, agreed.
“I think this is one thing that is going to fascinating in that committee room,” he told McDonough. “When you think about what we watched tonight, I don’t think anyone can come out of this thinking SMU doesn’t belong. They absolutely proven they are good enough. They just went toe-to-toe with the class of the ACC, and they almost pulled it off. And played bad, by the way That was a bad performance by SMU based on what they are capable of doing. …
“The committee has a very dangerous precedent that could be set if SMU is left out. Because then you are essentially telling people you are de-incentivizing the conference championship game. That is a very concerning thing for the health of college football.”
Social media was quick with opinions.
