Kirby Smart calls out Greg Sankey, SEC scheduling format after championship game
Kirby Smart has repeatedly questioned the fairness of the SEC’s scheduling format this year, and took an opportunity to do so again after Georgia beat Texas 22-19 in overtime in Saturday’s conference championship game in Atlanta.
This time, however, he did so on live television during the post-game trophy presentation, with Greg Sankey standing mere feet away. And the SEC commissioner looked none too pleased.
Asked by ABC’s Laura Rutledge about what it means for Georgia to (apparently) lock up a first-round bye for the College Football Playoff by virtue of winning the SEC championship, Smart didn’t hold back.
“It means rest for a team that Greg Sankey and his staff sent on the road, all year long,” Smart said, his voice rising as he went. “We need to take a little bit of a break and get ready for the College Football Playoff. This team needs some rest mentally.”
Here’s video (and watch for the expression on Sankey’s face at the end):
Georgia — which is 11-2 — played the toughest schedule in the SEC this season, and one of the toughest in the country. The Bulldogs’ SEC road games included Alabama, Texas and Ole Miss, plus a home game with Tennessee and the annual neutral-site game with Florida.
Smart and Georgia will find out where, when and potentially whom they will play in the College Football Playoff during the CFP Selection Show at 11 a.m. Central on Sunday on ESPN.
