Lane Kiffin, citing Georgia’s win over Texas, makes last CFP case for Ole Miss
Lane Kiffin had one more message Saturday night for the College Football Playoff committee.
Moments after Georgia’s 22-19 win over Texas in the SEC Championship Game, the Ole Miss coach posted a message to the CFP committee.
“Hard to beat the Georgia Bulldogs,” Kiffin said. “They get everyone’s best shot and just win. Congrats, Georgia.”
He mentioned Kirby Smart’s Bulldogs are 57-4 since 2020. Three of those losses were to Alabama, and the fourth loss was to, obviously, Ole Miss, which beat Georgia 28-10 last month.
A day after the CFP committee ranked Ole Miss team No. 13, behind No. 12 Miami and No. 11 Alabama, the Rebels head coach unleashed on the committee.
“You guys actually meet for days and come up with these rankings?” he posted on “X,” the social media platform formerly known as Twitter. “Do you actually watch the quality of players, teams, and road environments (we played in one of yours this year ) or just try and make the ACC feel relevant?
“By the way, one of your teams paid us not to play again next year. Same No. 12 spot you guys had Clemson ranked last week. How did that go against the SEC? Rewatch UGA-Clemson closely if you want a reminder of the two conferences.”
A day before the latest rankings were released, Kiffin – a former Alabama offensive coordinator – stomped for Ole Miss over Alabama.
On Saturday, Gunner Stockton, a little-known backup who had barely played in his Georgia career, came off the bench after an injury to Carson Beck and led the No. 5 Bulldogs to an improbable 22-19 overtime victory over No. 2 Texas.
The Bulldogs won their third SEC title under coach Kirby Smart, but the trophy comes with an even bigger prize. They get a first-round bye in the new 12-team College Football Playoff. Georgia came into the game ranked fifth by the CFP, but now it is assured of playing in the Sugar Bowl quarterfinal game on New Year’s Day in pursuit of its third national title in four seasons.
