AHSAA names North-South All-Star volleyball, cross country teams
The volleyball and cross country rosters for the 27th annual AHSAA North-South All-Star Week were announced on Tuesday.
The volleyball squads are made up of 15 rising seniors and the cross country teams include 10 runners.
The All-Star Week is set for July 17-22 in Montgomery and also will include competition in boys’ and girls’ basketball, baseball, softball, boys’ and girls’ soccer, tennis and golf. The 64th annual North-South All-Star Football Game was played in December in Mobile.
The All-Star competitions are hosted by the Alabama High School Athletic Directors & Coaches Association. Brandon Dean, the AHSADCA director, announced the volleyball and cross country rosters.
VOLLEYBALL
Coaches for the 2023 All-Star volleyball squads are Maggie Finley of Muscle Shoals, Mattie Gardner of Mountain Brook and administrative coach Sue Marshall of Randolph for the North stars. For the South, Gretchen Boykin of Spanish Fort, Julie Turner of Horseshoe Bend and administrative coach Virginia Franklin of Carver-Montgomery will be in charge.
The South All-Stars feature six players who participated in the AHSAA state finals in 2022, including Blakeley Robbins and Maysie Douglas from Class 6A champion Bayside Academy, which captured a national record 21st consecutive crown.
Anchoring the North All-Stars are three players who competed in the state championships, including Addison’s outside hitter Dacey Baker, who was All-State Tournament as the Bulldogs won their 14th state title.
The North won the 2022 all-star competition 3-2 and improved to 15-9 in the all-star series that was first played in 1997.
CROSS COUNTRY
The cross country competition will be held for the seventh time during All-Star Week.
Coaches for the North girls’ team area Stanley Johnson of Lawrence County and the North boys’ coach is Kim Nails of Southside-Gadsden. Michael McGovern of Mountain Brook will serve as administrative coach for both North squads. Johnson was the 2021 coach of the year according to the National Federation of State High School Associations.
For the South, Chris Rogers of Enterprise will coach the girls and Philip Peek of Bibb County will coach the boys. Ron Peters of Smiths Station will be administrative coach for both South teams.
Leading the South girls’ team is Smiths Station’s Railey Prins, who ran 19:11.31 at the AHSAA State Cross Country Championships at Oakville Indian Mounds Museum and State Park’s Jess Owens course, to finish 11th in the Class 7A race. Alexiana Hinote of Spanish Fort clocked 19:24.83 in the 6A race to cross the finish line in eighth place.
The North girls have six all-stars who rank under 20 minutes in the AHSAA 2022 Cross Country Championships, including Emma Bothern of James Clemens who ran 19:13.94 to finish 12th in the 7A race. Mountain Brook’s Mary Katherine Malone and Nancy Carolynne “Callie” Kent finishing fifth and 16th, respectively, in the 6A state race for the state champion Spartans.
Charles Perry of UMS-Wright headlines the South Boys’ All-Stars. He won the Class 6A individual title last season with a winning time of 15:43.54. The North squad features two runners each from the Class 5A state champion American Christian and Class 1A/2A state champion Cold Springs. Ethan Edgeworth of Cold Springs won the 1A/2A state meet race with a 15:53.26 time – fastest of any of the 10 runners named to the North squad.
The North girls won last year’s North-South competition 19-38 to improve to 3-2 in the series which was added to the North-South all-star lineup in 2017. The South won the boys’ race last summer 22-33. The North boys also hold a 3-2 edge in the series.
