Philadelphia Eagles wide receiver DeVonta Smith: ‘Count me in’
After missing the past two games because of a hamstring injury, Philadelphia wide receiver DeVonta Smith will be back in the lineup when the Eagles play the Carolina Panthers on Sunday.
“Count me in,” Smith said on Friday when asked in the NFL team’s locker room if he would play.
In his first NFL three seasons, the former Alabama All-American missed one game. In 2024, he missed the Week 4 game because of a concussion before having to sit out the past two contests.
“It really wasn’t up to me,” Smith said of being out. “… Sometimes you got to stay away from, like, yourself. If you’d just left it up to me, I’d just kept going and made things worse.”
Philadelphia quarterback Jalen Hurts said he knew his former Crimson Tide teammate has chaffed while sidelined.
“I know he’s not a guy that misses,” Hurts said, “and I know it’s pained him to have to sit out and watch. I know he’s eager to have everybody back together and go out there and play some ball.”
But even with Smith’s return, everybody won’t be back together for the Eagles. Philadelphia tight end Dallas Goedert sustained a knee injury in Sunday’s 24-19 victory over the Baltimore Ravens, hasn’t practice this week and won’t play against the Panthers.
The Eagles have played four of their 12 games with their starting set of wide receivers Smith and AJ Brown and tight end Goedert in 2024. But Philadelphia has won eight games in a row to reach 10-2.
“It just shows us that we can win and find ways to win,” Hurts said. “A lot of trust in a lot of guys. A lot of guys are capable. Sometimes you make adjustments to certain areas and scheme certain things, but at the end of the day, it’s about finding a way to win.”
The Panthers and Eagles kick off at noon CST Sunday at Lincoln Financial Field in Philadelphia.
