Cam Newton didn’t hold back on CFP: ‘Understand your weight class’
Cam Newton made it clear he doesn’t want to see anyone other than the big boys in the CFP.
“Understand your weight class,” the former Auburn and NFL quarterback told ESPN’s “Get Up” on Friday.
Chances are if you play in a non-Power 4 conference, he doesn’t want you playing for the College Football Playoff.
“I’m going to say it,” he said. “A lot of people are thinking it, and I’m gonna say it. No want to see SMU. No want to see Arizona State. No want to see Indiana. No want to see Boise State.”
He asked how do any of those teams get to play in the CFP before Ole Miss, a team which played Georgia, Kentucky and Florida?
“I think we really need to consider teams’ strength of schedule when you are talking about the national championship,” he said. “Have you really earned the right to say that, playing the talent you played? And no, Boise, without it being (Ashton) Jeanty, no, I don’t want to see Boise State. And if Boise State were to play Georgia, would Jeanty really get off?”
He added he doesn’t want to see a rematch of Georgia’s 65-7 win over TCU last season. Newton doesn’t want to see USC beat Oklahoma 55-19, a reference to the 2004 season “when USC was supposed to play Auburn.”
