The shocking statement Ty Simpson made in first meeting with Kalen DeBoer
Alabama football quarterback Ty Simpson didn’t walk into his first meeting with Kalen DeBoer taking a timid approach.
Far from it, actually.
Simpson asserted he wanted to take DeBoer’s job one day.
“I told Coach DeBoer on his first meeting. I’m like, ‘You were the successor of Coach (Nick) Saban. Now I want to be the successor of you. When you retire here and you have a great career like Coach Saban had, I want to be done with my NFL career and take your job,’” Simpson shared on Crimson Drive. “He started laughing and said, ‘We’ll try to make that happen.‘”
DeBoer took over for Saban this past January after Saban coached 17 seasons in Tuscaloosa and won six national championships.
Simpson had been asked if coaching was in his future. Simpson is the son of a coach: longtime UT-Martin head coach Jason Simpson.
“Oh absolutely,” Simpson said. “I think that is what I want to do.”
Simpson wants to, of course. have a long playing career first. The former five-star quarterback has been Jalen Milroe’s primary backup the past two seasons. Simpson joined the Crimson Tide ahead of the 2022 season.
Whenever Simpson’s playing career wraps up, then he wants to join the family business.
“I love coaching,” Simpson said. “I’d love to be coaching with my dad one day. I love ball. I’m a ball kid.”
Next up, Alabama will face Auburn in the Iron Bowl on Saturday (2:30 p.m. CT, ABC) at Bryant-Denny Stadium.
