National wholesale club raising membership fee for first time in 7 years
A national wholesale club announced it was raising its membership fee, the first such increase in seven years.
BJ’s Wholesale Club will raise membership prices starting Jan. 1, 2025. Club membership fees will go up by $5 a year to $60; Club+ membership fees will go up by $10 to $120 a year.
“Since the last membership fee increase, the company has transformed its business with a relentless focus on delivering value to members,” BJ’s said in a statement as part of its third-quarter earnings release. “(The) announcement allows the company to invest in an even stronger value proposition for its 7.5 million member base, which continues to grow.”
To lessen the blow, existing Club+ members, including those with BJ’s One+ Mastercard cardholders, will get two free same-day deliveries on eligible orders of $50 or more during each annual membership period.
According to its release, comparable club sales increased 1.5% year-over-year in the third quarter of 2024 while membership fee income was up 8.4% to $115 million when compared to 2023.
In the last year, BJs has opened three new clubs and four new gas stations.
BJ’s currently operates 247 clubs in 20 states, including one location in Alabama in Madison. It currently has some 7.5 million members nationwide.
