NFL fines former Alabama receiver $19,697 for obscene gesture

The NFL levied 19 fines for transgressions during Week 11 of the 2024 season, and Detroit Lions wide receiver Jameson Williams got the biggest one.

Williams didn’t put a big hit on a defenseless player or make helmet-to-helmet contact to incur the punishment. But he did grab his crotch after scoring a touchdown – officially it was “unsportsmanlike conduct (obscene gestures)” — and that drew a $19,697 fine. There was no penalty assessed on the field.

Williams scored on a 64-yard reception during the Lions’ 52-6 victory over the Jacksonville Jaguars on Sunday. At the end of his sprint down the field, Williams leaped backward into the end zone holding his crotch in a tribute to former NFL running back Marshawn Lynch.

When Lynch used the celebration at the end of a 79-yard touchdown run in the Seattle Seahawks’ 35-6 victory over the Arizona Cardinals on Dec. 21, 2014, the NFL fined him $11,050 for “excessive celebration (inappropriate gesture).”

This is the second time this season that Williams has been fined for a touchdown celebration.

In Detroit’s 42-29 victory over the Seattle Seahawks on Sept. 30, Williams dunked the football over the crossbar after a 70-yard touchdown reception. Williams said he meant the celebration as a tribute to former Lions wide receiver Calvin Johnson. He was flagged for unsportsmanlike conduct and got fined $14,069 by the NFL.

The NFL announced its Week 11 fines on Saturday.

Two other former Alabama standouts also were fined by the NFL for Week 11 infractions:

  • Denver Broncos cornerback Patrick Surtain II was fined $11,255 for a facemask penalty in a 38-6 victory over the Atlanta Falcons on Sunday.
  • Pittsburgh Steelers safety Minkah Fitzpatrick was fined $11,255 for a late-hit penalty in an 18-16 victory over the Baltimore Ravens on Sunday.

The NFL uses a collectively bargained schedule of fines to determine the amount of monetary punishment. The NFL’s Schedule of Fines also comes with a list of aggravating and mitigating factors that can affect the size of a fine.
