‘Happy and grateful’ to play in the snow, Jameis Winston delivers upset win for Browns
Cleveland Browns quarterback Jameis Winston said he felt blessed to be able to play “in true football weather.” And that was before it really started snowing at Huntington Bank Field in Cleveland on Thursday night.
A Hueytown High School star who won the Heisman Trophy at Florida State and played for the Tampa Bay Buccaneers and New Orleans Saints in the NFL before joining Cleveland this season, Winston got a victory in a second-half snowstorm as the Browns rallied for a 24-19 upset of the Pittsburgh Steelers.
“I am so happy and grateful that the Lord has blessed me to play in some snow, to be in true football weather,” Winston said moments before kickoff on Prime Video’s telecast of the AFC North contest, then led the two-win Browns to a victory over the two-loss Steelers.
But before delivering the winning drive, Winston lost a fumble on a sack at the Cleveland 27-yard line leading to Pittsburgh’s go-ahead touchdown with 6:15 left to play, then threw an interception on the next possession with 4:22 remaining.
But when the Browns started their final possession at the 45-yard line (after a 15-yard punt by the Steelers’ Corliss Waitman) with 3:22 remaining and trailing 19-18, Winston got Cleveland to the end zone with 57 seconds left, when running back Nick Chubb scored his second TD of the game from 2 yards out.
On the final drive, Winston threw to wide receiver Jerry Jeudy for a 15-yard gain two plays before Chubb’s game-deciding touchdown. It was the only one of Cleveland’s 10 third-down snaps that the Browns converted into a first down.
But Cleveland went 4-of-4 on fourth down, including a 5-yard connection with Jeudy on fourth-and-3 on the Browns’ final possession.
Winston also scrambled 2 yards for a touchdown on fourth down, then completed a 2-point conversion pass as Cleveland took an 18-6 lead with 12:16 to play.
Winston completed 18-of-27 passes for 219 yards with no touchdowns and one interception.
Winston has started Cleveland’s three games since Deshaun Watson sustained a season-ending injury, and the Browns have won two of them. In Cleveland’s 29-24 victory over the Baltimore Ravens on Oct. 27, Winston threw the game-deciding TD pass with 59 seconds remaining.
A former Alabama standout, Jeudy led Cleveland with six receptions for 85 yards on Thursday night.
