Baltimore Orioles shortstop Gunnar Henderson finished fourth in the voting for the American League Most Valuable Player Award for the 2024 MLB season.

The Baseball Writers Association of America announced New York Yankees outfielder Aaron Judge won the award unanimously on Thursday night.

Henderson was a high school star at Morgan Academy in Selma who won Alabama’s Mr. Baseball honor in 2019.

Henderson received six third-place votes, 16 fourth-place votes and eight fifth-place votes from the panel of 30 BBWAA members who selected the winner.

With 208 points, Henderson finished behind Judge, who collected 420 points for 30 first-place votes; Kansas City Royals shortstop Bobby Witt Jr., who got all 30 second-place votes for 270 points; and Yankees outfield Juan Soto, who had 21 third-place, seven fourth-place and two fifth-place votes for 229 points.

After winning the American League Rookie of the Year Award unanimously last season, Henderson hit 37 home runs and had 118 runs and 92 RBIs in 2024. Henderson started at shortstop for the American League at the 2024 MLB All-Star Game.

The National League MVP Award also finished with a unanimous vote for the winner, with Los Angeles Dodgers designated hitter Shohei Ohtani earning the award. Ohtani also won two MVP awards in the American League with the Los Angeles Angels.
