Earthquake rumbles through Walker County: ‘It shook my house’

A 2.5 magnitude earthquake rumbled through Walker County at 10 p.m. on Monday, nearly three miles under Earth’s surface, according to the United States Geological Survey.

While some residents described the event as “weird” and “scary,” others say a 2.5 is nothing to worry about.

According to the Earthquake Magnitude Scale, earthquakes anywhere between 2.5 and 5.4 can be felt, but only cause minor damage. The scale estimates that around 500,000 earthquakes occur within this range each year.

ABC 33/40 meteorologist James Spann posted to Facebook Monday night asking residents if they felt the quake and many said they did.

“I felt it, it shook my house, and I also heard the rumbling explosion sound, it was weird,” one commentor wrote.

“Reminded me of explosions from a distant mine when they were working. According to the map I am about 6 miles from where they have it marked. Had to straighten some pictures this morning. There was no doubt what it was the second it happened. A quick shake and that was it.”

“It really did sound like people running through the house shaking,” another wrote.

“It only lasted a few seconds but we were all wide awake after it.”

But a few Alabama transplants took the event a little less seriously.

“Lol, did you feel a 2.5…..from this SoCal transplant who has been here for almost a decade,” one woman wrote.

“You don’t even need to get up unless it’s a good 4 or up!”
