Live updates: Kalen DeBoer, Alabama coordinators speak before Oklahoma game

Alabama football returns to SEC play this week, traveling to Oklahoma for a game it must win to stay alive in the College Football Playoff hunt. The Sooners have struggled in their first SEC season, and enter the game 5-5 overall, 1-5 in conference play.

Oklahoma had a bye week entering Saturday’s game, while Alabama played its yearly FCS game, blowing out Mercer. Saturday’s game is scheduled for 6:30 p.m. CT in Norman, and will be aired on ABC.

On Monday, Crimson Tide head coach Kalen DeBoer will speak to local reporters. He’ll be joined by UA defensive coordinator Kane Wommack and offensive coordinator Nick Sheridan.

The press conference is scheduled for 11:30 a.m. CT in Tuscaloosa. Follow along here for live updates.

— Sheridan is up first. He’s asked about the backup quarterbacks who played on Saturday. Sheridan says they all did well, and the snaps were valuable for their growth and developments.

— Question is about what makes Jalen Milroe’s skillset so dangerous. Sheridan says he’s uniquely talented, with his arm talent and ability to run the ball. Says Milroe deserves credit for the work he has put in throughout his career.

— Sheridan is asked what jumps out about Oklahoma’s defense. He compliments the toughness and effort the Sooners show. Says he respects the OU players and staff.

— Question is about playing in road environment. Sheridan says Alabama will lean on past experiences to help them handle the road trip.

— Question is about some of Alabama’s receivers who got in on Saturday. Sheridan praises the group, particularly Rico Scott and Caleb Odom. Says the Tide’s younger receivers have worked extremely hard. He says the UA coaching staff was encouraged by the showing.

— Sheridan says Richard Young has done well throughout the season. Praises his effort in the Mercer game, and says Young is well-liked by his coaches and teammates.

— Question is about center Parker Brailsford. Sheridan says Brailsford’s strength helps him overcome a lack of size. Points to body-control and balance as other positive traits that the center holds.

— Sheridan is asked about pass protection. He says that despite not allowing a sack, there were moments Saturday he wasn’t especially happy with. Says that’s a job for all 11 players on the field, notes things the team can do to keep the defense from pinning its ears back in the pass rush.

— Question is about Caleb Odom. Sheridan praises his work ethic, said he can learn from a miss on deep pass in Mercer game. Says Odom “has great football in front of him.”

— That ends Sheridan’s portion. Kane Wommack is up next.

— Wommack starts out by saying it was good to get some of the Tide’s younger players in the game. Said the group gave up too many yards in the first half, but improved in the second half, even with backups in the game.

— Says Alabama is doing a good job taking the ball away from teams. Says he was encouraged watching the film, seeing how many times UA players were trying to create turnovers.

— Says Norman will be an exciting environment to play in. Says Oklahoma fights hard, despite struggles this season. Praises OU quarterback Jackson Arnold’s skillset.

— Wommack is asked what he implemented to get Alabama to create takeaways. Says Alabama has six different drills to emphasize creating turnovers, sometimes has practice periods where it only tries to take the ball away, without worrying about tackling.

— Question is about Bray Hubbard. Wommack says Hubbard’s level of preparation hasn’t changed, the freshman was extremely locked in so he was ready for his opportunity.

— Wommack is asked about his relationship with Jalen Milroe. He says Milroe has a “gravitational pull” with how he carries himself. Says he enjoys being around Milroe, jokes that the quarterback and punter are a defensive coordinator’s two best friends.

— Question is about the Tide’s pass rush and how they can exploit Oklahoma. He says Alabama has found success in that area by creating multiple looks up front, which it will continue to do. Says the goal is to try and create as many one-on-one matchups as possible.

— Asked about transition from head coach job at South Alabama to his current DC role. Says it’s a very different role, and he trusted Kalen DeBoer completely when he made the move. Praises DeBoer’s consistency, and his support for assistants, which has helped Wommack feel able to do his job better.

— Wommack is asked about Qua Russaw’s Saturday interception. Says Russaw is growing as a player on the edge. Says the interception came because of the defense executing well, and Russaw is doing a good job staying “relentless in his process” and is playing better as the season has gone along.

— Wommack says Yhonzae Pierre is taking positive steps. Says it’s fun to see younger players mature throughout a season. Notes that the Tide’s young talent is taking notice of some of UA’s older starters.

— DeBoer coming up next.

— DeBoer says he was pleased with his team’s focus leading up to the Mercer game. Says older players relish being able to get younger players time on the field in lopsided win.

— Says Oklahoma game is a chance for Alabama to prove itself once again. Says it will take a solid week of preparation.

— DeBoer is asked about special teams coordinator Jay Nunez, who came over from Oklahoma this offseason. Says he never worked with Nunez before, but they worked at some of the same places. Says Nunez is “a really great football coach,” and notes that the special teams coordinator touches nearly every player on the roster.
