Former Alabama defensive back takes the lead for most NFL fines in 2024
The Baltimore Ravens stopped a 2-point conversion pass with 38 seconds to play to secure a 35-34 victory over the Cincinnati Bengals on Nov. 7. But the NFL win came at a cost for Ravens cornerback Marlon Humphrey – literally.
On Saturday, the NFL announced it had fined the former Hoover High School and Alabama standout $33,766 for two second-half transgressions against Cincinnati.
The NFL fined Humphrey $22,511 for unnecessary roughness (use of the helmet) on an incomplete second-down pass by the Bengals in the third quarter. Humphrey was not penalized on the field for the infraction.
The NFL also fined Humphrey $11,255 for a face-mask penalty that was marked off with 1:06 to play. Humphrey had not been flagged for a face-mask penalty in the previous 108 games of his NFL career.
While the fines were the first of 2024 for Humphrey, another former Alabama defensive back took over the lead as the most-fined player this season when the Week 9 fines were announced.
Detroit Lions safety Brian Branch became the first player to be fined five times by the NFL in 2024. Branch got a $10,128 fine for a hip-drop tackle in a 26-23 victory over the Houston Texans on Sunday night. Branch brought down wide receiver Robert Woods for a 1-yard gain on a completion on the play, and he did not receive penalty on the field for the tackle.
Each of Branch’s fines has amounted to $10,128 for a total of $50,640.
Two other players with Alabama football roots were fined for Week 9 transgressions:
- The NFL fined Minnesota Vikings offensive tackle Cam Robinson (Alabama) $11,255 for unnecessary roughness in a 12-7 victory over the Jacksonville Jaguars on Sunday. Robinson was flagged on the field for the play – a Jacksonville interception on which he made the tackle.
- The NFL fined Pittsburgh Steelers wide receiver George Pickens (Hoover) $16,833 for a face-mask infraction in a 28-27 victory over the Washington Commanders on Sunday. Pickens had a 4-yard reception on the play, and he was not penalized on the field.
The NFL fined 26 players for Week 9 fouls.
The NFL uses a collectively bargained schedule of fines to determine the amount of monetary punishment. The NFL’s Schedule of Fines also comes with a list of aggravating and mitigating factors that can affect the size of a fine.
