Woman charged in fatal Mountain Brook wreck initially thought to be single-vehicle crash

A Birmingham woman has been charged in the traffic death of a man on Montclair Road in Mountain Brook.

Hannah Gray Williams, 30, is charged with reckless manslaughter and leaving the scene of an accident with injuries, police announced Friday.

Killed in the crash was 33-year-old Robert Ashley May Jr., a Montgomery native and former Troy University cheerleader.

The fatal crash happened about 1:30 p.m. on Saturday, Oct. 12, in the 3900 block of Montclair Road.

Officers found what they believed to be a single-vehicle crash in which May was ejected. He was taken to UAB Hospital where he died a short time later.

As officers interviewed witnesses at the scene of the crash, it was revealed a second vehicle was involved and fled the scene prior to officer’s arrival, police said Friday.

They later determined the second vehicle was traveling at a high rate of speed and engaged in dangerous and reckless driving that contributed to the crash.

The case was presented to the Jefferson County District Attorney’s Office Thursday, and the warrants were issued against Williams.

It was not immediately clear if Williams is in custody.

May was a graduate Stanhope Elmore High School, where he was a standout player on the varsity football team and awarded Defensive Player of the Year.

Family said he was also an outstanding baseball player and attended Troy University on a cheerleading scholarship.

He worked as a dent repair specialist at Carvana in Bessemer, specializing in foreign cars.

In a Facebook post, family wrote, “To know Robert was to love him. He was beautiful. He was a great person. He was a great brother and uncle. He was a great everything.”

“He was the best son,’’ the family wrote. “The world is less bright now.”
