Scam warning: Here’s the latest way thieves are trying to separate you from your money

Another day, another scam.

The Madison County Sheriff’s Office is warning residents about a new wave of telephone scams where thieves are posing as representatives of law enforcement and the court systems alleging individuals have failed to attend jury duty and will face arrest if they do not meet their demands.

The calls have been both automated and live. The scammers threaten the people with arrest if they don’t pay a fine immediately and, in some cases, they supply what looks like legal documents showing names and other pertinent information to try and trick victims and have them pay money they don’t owe.

The whole thing is a scam and Sheriff Kevin Turner said his department is working to track down those involved.

“We know that these online scams can be distressing and unsettling for members of our community,” Turner said. “We wish to assure the public that we are taking all necessary measures to identify and apprehend the individuals responsible for these fraudulent activities.”

Madison County Sheriff’s Office offered tips to avoid being a victim to the scam:

  • Never give personal or financial information to someone you don’t know or trust.
  • Avoid unsolicited calls or emails asking for payment or personal information.
  • Verify the caller’s identity by contacting the court or law enforcement agency directly.
  • Do not make payments or provide sensitive information over the phone.
