Watch moving video detailing Malachi Moore’s friendship with young girl in his hometown

ESPN’s College GameDay aired a touching video on Saturday detailing the friendship between Alabama safety Malachi Moore and Henrietta Murray, an 11-year-old Trussville girl who died this past May after a lifelong battle with mitochondrial disease.

Penny Moore, Malachi’s mother, taught Henrietta in kindergarten several years ago at Paine Elementary in Trussville. The two became close friends while Malachi — also known as “Chi” — was being recruited by Alabama and Henrietta was facing health challenges that left her nearly blind.

“When I first met her, she could see a little bit out of her peripheral (vision),” Malachi said. “I remember seeing a (video) clip of me playing on ESPN and Henrietta is all the way up on the TV screen, (yelling) ‘Go ‘Chi, go ‘Chi.’”

Moore invited Henrietta to join him as his special guest to an Alabama game during the recruiting process in 2018, and on several other occasions during his time playing for the Crimson Tide. Moore later gave her a football signed by both him and then-Alabama coach Nick Saban.

“To see this kid who has this great future ahead of him, that he cared about my daughter, and when she’s at a low point, he is so encouraging to her and let her know how beautiful she is,” Henrietta’s mother, Maria Murray, said. “That meant the world to me.”

Henrietta Murray died May 16. Malachi Moore was one of the pallbearers at her funeral.
