For the second time in two weeks, Homewood knocked off Parker on Friday night.

This time, the fifth-ranked Patriots did it on their home court.

Junior Will Pope hit back-to-back 3-pointers to open the game and Homewood never looked back, rolling to a 71-53 victory over the Bison. The Patriots’ two wins this month over Parker have come by a combined 44 points.

“We worked really hard this week in practice. Coach put together a great gameplan,” Pope said. “Me just hitting the shots was a bonus. This was a good team win, and I’m proud of our team.”

Pope finished with a team-high 12 points.

“When he’s on, he’s knocking it down, and he was on tonight,” Patriots head coach Tim Shepler said.

After Pope’s two 3s to open the game, Parker came back to knock down five 3s of its own in the first half to stay in the game. Yet the Patriots (18-9) responded with four 3-pointers in the decisive third quarter to increase their lead to 20 points.

All the 10 players who played for the Patriots scored. The Patriots also had four players hit 3-pointers in the pivotal third.

“A lot of guys can do some good things for us. Some nights it’s one guy, some nights it’s other guys,” Shepler said. “Having that versatility is very good because kids will share the ball with each other. We got a lot of guys who can shoot it, so yeah, we’re going to put up a lot of threes most nights.”

Pope said balance is definitely a key for Homewood.

“Our team is very spread out. We have five that’ll come in for the starters, and they’re just as good,” he said. “We’ve got a good rotation going, and we’re playing great basketball right now. I think this gives us a real confidence boost, and we’re ready to play the good teams and get going in the tournament.”

Homewood will close their season as the No. 1 team in Class 6A, Area 9, setting the Patriots up to host the area tournament.

“We got through the area now. We got the opportunity to host a game because we won the area,” Shepler said. “We know now, these teams have seen us twice, and they’re going to be covering our shooters, so we’ve got to keep working to get better.”

Senior Regi Long led Parker with a game-high 15 points, and agile 6-foot-5 sophomore Nathen Henley finished the game with 10 points.

Next, Homewood will take on 7A No. 3 Hoover on Monday. Parker will travel to play Minor on Tuesday.

CLASS 7A

Hoover 64, Tuscaloosa County 38: The third-ranked Bucs beat No. 9 Tuscaloosa County in an Area 5 game on Senior Night at Hoover. The Bucs improved to 24-3 overall and 5-1 in area play.

Hoover led 14-13 after one quarter and 31-27 at the half. The home team outscored the Wildcats 17-2 in the third period to put the game out of reach.

Hoover had nine players in the scoring column, led by Salim London with 13 points, 4 rebounds, 3 steals and 3 assists. DeWayne Brown grabbed 8 rebounds and blocked 6 shots to go with his 6 points. Elijah Thomas scored 9 points and Noah McAfee added 8.

Hoover plays at Homewood on Monday at 7 p.m.

Baker 84, Alma Bryant 46: The No. 3 Hornets rallied from a 16-12 first-quarter deficit to record their second-highest point total on the season. Baker (21-5, 6-0 in Area 1) led 32-23 at the half and 59-37 headed into the final period.

Playing without leading scorer Labaron Philon, Baker was led in scoring by Ryan Majors. The junior guard scored a career-high 16 points, including four 3-pointers. Andersen Madyun, a junior forward/center, also had a career best 15 points. Alex Threadgill, Josh Flowers and Lovalle Nelson scored 9 points apiece. All 12 Baker players made it into the scoring column.

Nate Orr and Christian Mose led Alma Bryant with 13 points each.

Baker plays at Blount on Tuesday at 7:30 p.m.

Huntsville 61, Grissom 42: The fourth-ranked Crimson Panthers got hot midway through the first quarter and raced to a 15-0 run to break away on the way to the win over No. 6 and archrival Grissom at a near-packed Huntsville gymnasium on Friday.

Huntsville (19-8, 5-0) clinched the Area 7 regular-season title for the third straight season with the win.

The home team started out hot, leading 18-7 after one quarter, thanks to the 15-0 run that broke a 7-all tie with 3:41 left in the period that pushed the Panthers to a 22-7 advantage. Grissom battled back, but trailed 35-22 at the half.

Huntsville led 43-28 headed into the final period and led 58-34 with 3 minutes left in the game before both teams emptied their benches to relieve their starters.

The Panthers shot 52 percent from the floor and made 7-of-9 free throws. Grissom made 37 percent of its field-goal tries and was 6-of-11 from the line. The winners outrebounded Grissom 35-15.

Caleb Harrison led Huntsville’s balanced attack with 13 points and 10 rebounds with a pair of blocked shots. Ja’Mari Arnold also had a double-double with 11 points, 10 rebounds and 5 assists. Eli Stapler came off the bench to score 13 points, including going 3-for-3 on 3-point shots.

Javon Alexander led Grissom (21-7, 4-2) with 11 points. Melvyn Webb scored 9 and Izzy Miles had 8 points for the Tigers.

Huntsville will host the area tournament as the top seed ahead of No. 2 Grissom and third seed Sparkman. Albertville will be the fourth seed.

Sparkman 86, Albertville 31: The Senators (19-9) rolled to the Area 7 win at home on Friday.

Trayton Berger led Sparkman with 23 points, including 6-of-7 from behind the 3-point arc. Karmelo Montgomery scored 12 points and claimed 5 rebounds. Will Hawkins scored 10 with 7 assists and Cameron Jones had 10 points with 5 rebounds.

John Wesley Seay scored 12 points to lead Albertville. Samuel Barclift added 10.

Bob Jones 46, James Clemens 42: The Patriots improved to 18-9 overall and 4-2 in Area 8 with the win over crosstown rival James Clemens on Friday.

Julius Winston led Bob Jones with 17 points. Malachi Mitchell tossed in 13 points and Sean Paul dished out 7 assists.

Piece Rope and Bryce Mason led James Clemens with 11 points apiece.

The Patriots play at Mae Jemison on Tuesday.

CLASS 6A

Mountain Brook 60, Baylor (Tenn.) 53: The second-ranked Spartans picked up the win over Baylor School of Chattanooga at home on Saturday.

Ty Davis had a double-double to lead Mountain Brook (19-6). Davis scored 20 points, grabbed 10 rebounds and had 4 assists and 3 steals. Julius Clark pitched in 17 points and had 8 rebounds. John Colvin added 10 points in the win.

Brock Barton and Zane Restelli led Baylor (13-6) with 15 points apiece. Nyziah Whaley had 12.

On Friday, Mountain Brook wrapped up Area 10 play with a 64-56 win at Pell City. The Spartans finished area play at 6-0 and will host the tournament at a time and date to be determined. Area tournaments will be played between Feb. 4-11.

Davis was the leading scorer for Mountain Brook with 25 points. He also had 5 rebounds and 4 steals. Henry Hufham scored 8 points and grabbed 6 rebounds for the Spartans.

McGill-Toolen 61, Picayune (Miss.) 60: Bennett Russ hit a shot with 13 seconds left then the Yellow Jackets got an end-of-the-game stop to rally to beat Picayune in Biloxi on Saturday.

The third-ranked Jackets, who didn’t lead until midway through the fourth quarter, got 22 points from Devin McCaine, including a buzzer-beating 3-pointer at the end of the second quarter to pull McGill within 6, 38-32.

Ray Andrews scored on all four of his shots to end with 8 points and team-high 5 rebounds.

The Jackets (22-6) found themselves down 52-45 heading into the fourth, but McCaine scored 10 in the final period before Russ’ game-winner. Russ and Alex Heim each finished with a team-high 5 assists and 3 steals.

McGill-Toolen’s 12-game winning streak dates back to Dec. 12. The Jackets are back in action Tuesday for Senior Night at the Portier Center when they host Theodore.

Central-Tuscaloosa 59, Paul W. Bryant 56: The Falcons picked up the Area 6 win on Friday at home.

King Larkin led Central (15-11) with 19 points and 8 rebounds. Javion Taylor scored 17 points and grabbed 6 rebounds in the win.

Adrian Wooley scored 18 points to lead the Stampede. JJ Crawford and Jacob Johnson scored 10 points apiece for Bryant.

Pelham 42, Helena 41: The Panthers slipped past rival Helena on the road on Friday in an Area 8 showdown. The win put Pelham at 2-2 in the area, good for second place.

Jackson Germak hit four 3-point buckets on his way to 17 points to lead Pelham. Kamari Hollis scored 14 in the win.

Pelham travels to Mortimer Jordan on Monday for a 7:30 p.m. tip.

Theodore vs Saraland Boys Basketball

Theodore 53, Saraland 30: Theodore hit a barrage of 3-pointers to start the third quarter, leading to an 11-0 run that broke open a tight game in Area 1 action on Friday night.

“The win is huge because it keeps us with an opportunity to at least get into a coin flip to host the area tournament,” Theodore coach Philip Roebling said. “I am so proud of the guys tonight, they really picked up the pressure and that turned the whole game around when we got some turnovers and easy baskets.”

The Bobcats improved to 12-10 overall, 5-1 in the area and are scheduled to travel to McGill-Toolen on Tuesday, while the Spartans (7-15, 1-5) will host East Central of Hurley, Miss., in the Shooting to Change Autism Awareness game for Senior Night.

Trey Glover had 12 points, 4 rebounds and 3 steals and E.J. Simmons 12 points, 2 rebounds and 4 steals. Kamrean Johnson and J.J. Bush each scored 9. Dee Williams scored 9 points, while Isaiah Bowie added 7 points, 10 rebounds and 2 steals for Saraland.

The Spartans led 10-3 after the first quarter, but the Bobcats turned things around with a 10-0 run in the second to go out in front 22-15 at halftime and never trailed again. The big third quarter run increased the advantage to 42-26 going into the final quarter.

Blount 72, Murphy 63: Joseph Paige scored 21 points as Blount improved to 16-6 overall and 5-1 in Area 1 play.

DeVontaey Woulard scored 17 and Antonio Jackson had 16 points and 11 rebounds.

TK Barnett scored 13 points for the Panthers, while Cordarius Dixon had 12.

Robertsdale 57, Baldwin County 43: Ja’Leal White scored 12 points and Katton Hobbs had 11 as the Golden Bears gave coach Marshall Davis his 200th career win. All 200 have come at Robertsdale.

Jay Marshall and Tahjrick Bradley scored 11 each for the Tigers.

Robertsdale (19-8, 3-2 Area 2) plays at Spanish Fort on Tuesday.

CLASS 4A

Westminster Christian 87, Decatur Heritage 39: The top-ranked Wildcats recorded a season-high offensive output in the rout at home of 2A No. 5 Decatur Heritage on Friday. All 10 Westminster Christian players scored for the second straight game.

Junior Chase McCarty led the Wildcats (21-3) with 15 points. Senior Tyler Engle was perfect on the night hitting 6-of-6 shots for 13 points, followed by senior Eric Robinson with 12.

Westminster connected on 36-of-55 shots from the floor (65 percent), including 10-for-19 from behind the 3-point arc. The Wildcats’ defense held the Eagles to 34 percent shooting (14-for-41) and outrebounded the visitors 32-15. Westminster forced 17 turnovers that turned into 24 points.

Hayden Page led Decatur Heritage (12-10) with 9 points.

Westminster raced to a 24-8 lead at the end of the first quarter and increased it to a 30-point halftime advantage at 50-20. The home team outscored Decatur Heritage 25-5 in the third period to carry a 75-25 margin into the final period.

UMS-Wright 53, St. Michael 25: The Bulldogs jumped to a 19-11 first-quarter lead and carried a 31-16 edge into halftime in the Area 1 finale. UMS-Wright finished 5-1 in the area and is 17-10 overall.

Bridges Simmons led UMS-Wright with 12 points and Sims Druhan added 11. Senior Christopher Jones hit his first two 3-point attempts early in the first quarter to boost the Bulldogs to the lead.

Josh Kurz led the Cardinals with 6 points.

Haleyville 50, Cordova 43: The Lions earned the Area 12 win on the road on Friday to improve to 12-13. Haleyville remained unbeaten in games against 4A teams this season.

Drake James led Haleyville with 24 points.

Priceville 60, Danville 51: The Bulldogs rallied to earn the road win over 3A Danville on Friday. The home team led 22-15 after one quarter before Priceville held the Hawks to 2 points in the second quarter to lead 30-22 at the half. The winners led 41-33 headed into the fourth period.

The Bulldogs (12-11) hit 18-of-26 free throws while Danville made 1-of-5 on the night.

Cole Lindeman led all scorers with 23 points for the winners. Lindeman finished with 5 rebounds. Jake Langlois grabbed 12 rebounds to go with his 6 points. Caleb Lawrence scored 7 in the win.

Priceville travels to Fairview on Monday, to Deshler on Tuesday and closes out the regular season at home vs. Madison County on Thursday.

Sylacauga 47, Prattville Christian 41: Sylacauga held off PCA, despite three Panthers scoring in double figures. PJ Evans led Prattville Christian with 13 points, 6 rebounds and 5 assists. Conner Williams had 12 points and 5 rebounds. Carson Roberson scored 11 points with 6 rebounds.

Prattville Christian (14-13) travels to play Montgomery Academy on Monday.

CLASS 3A

Cottage Hill 64, Mary G. Montgomery 55: No. 2 Cottage Hill used a 23-6 run in the third quarter to pull away from Mary G. Montgomery and run its winning streak to eight games.

MGM led at half 25-22 and built its largest lead at 31-24 with 6 minutes remaining in the third quarter.

However, Tyler Thomas hit a couple of key buckets to spark the Warriors’ third-quarter run, resulting in a 47-37 advantage at the end of three. He scored 13 of his 19 points in the third quarter.

“We got back to basics in the second half,” Cottage Hill coach Adam Thomas said. “We like to play fast. We were able to force some turnovers, get some points on fast breaks and it really fared well for us.”

The Vikings got off to a slow start, trailing early on 14-7 in the first quarter. But a 14-2 run led to a 21-16 lead. Sophomore Jeremiah Bolton had a team-high 14 points, 8 coming in the second quarter.

“Twenty-two points in the first half? That was very uncommon for us – missed shot opportunities, turnovers, no urgency – led to us being behind,” Adam Thomas said.

Cottage Hill’s Trent Thomas led all scorers with 23 points. The 9-point victory was the Warriors’ closest during their current eight-game winning streak as they improved to 21-2.

“Our plan when scheduling is to put our guys on the court with top talent and big schools, teams with guys that you know are going to push you and challenge you,” Thomas said.

Erik Washington and Lashondae Horace each scored 10 for Mary G. Montgomery (12-8). DeMarcus Broughton added 8 points.

Montgomery Academy 55, Alabama Christian 44: The Eagles improved to 11-10 overall and 3-3 in Area 6 play with the win.

Brewer Welch led Montgomery Academy with 16 points. Welch also had 6 assists, 4 rebounds and 3 steals. DJ Vinson had a double-double with 12 points and 11 rebounds. Skyler Stovall scored 11 points with 4 rebounds, 3 assists and 3 steals. Seth Edwards grabbed 8 rebounds to go with his 8 points and 2 blocked shots.

The Eagles host Prattville Christian on Monday for Senior Night.

CLASS 1A

Georgiana 67, Opp 62: The Panthers slipped past Opp in the Butler County vs. Covington Count Showcase at Andalusia High School on Saturday. The seventh-ranked Panthers improved to 16-8 on the season.

Nasir Cheatham and Jaden Stallworth notched their second straight double-double offensive performances. Cheatham poured in 29 points, grabbed 11 rebounds and had 4 assists. For his efforts, Cheatham was named the showcase’s MVP. Stallworth scored 15 points and hauled in 16 rebounds. Jacob Lowery added 12 points for the winners.

On Friday, Georgiana whipped McKenzie 74-55 on the road to run its Area 5 record to 6-2.

Cheatham, Stallworth and Jacobie Morgan recorded double-doubles in the win. Cheatham had 15 points and 11 rebounds. Stallworth scored 12 points and claimed 13 rebounds. Morgan had 10 points and 10 rebounds with 8 assists. Lowery pitched in 13 points for the Panthers.

Florala 59, Brantley 55: Fifth-ranked Florala knocked off No. 3 Brantley at home on Saturday.

Jayden Parks scored 20 points for Brantley (17-3) and Keldric Brown added 12 points and grabbed 10 rebounds.

GIRLS

CLASS 7A

Hoover 65, Bartlett (Tenn.) 40: The Bucs trailed 11-9 after one quarter, but exploded in the second and third quarters to pull away in the Robertson’s Sportswear Classic in Booneville, Miss., on Saturday. Hoover outscored the team from metro Memphis 23-14 in the second to lead 32-25 at the half and 22-9 in the third quarter.

Reniya Kelley led the winners with 22 points. Layla Etchison scored 14 for Hoover and Ariana Peagler pitched in 10.

On Friday, Hoover rolled past Tuscaloosa County 65-38 on Senior Night. The Bucs outscored their Area 5 foe 24-10 in the opening quarter and led 42-22 at the half. Hoover carried a 61-33 margin into the fourth quarter.

Alanah Pooler and Kristen McMillan led Hoover with 12 points each.

Mary G. Montgomery 58, Cottage Hill 28: MGM’s defensive pressure was the difference in Friday’s decisive win. The Vikings held the Warriors to single digits in each quarter en route to their fifth straight victory.

“When we can disrupt what the other team can do and they make mistakes, that’s where we are successful,” Vikings coach Matt Bosarge said.

MGM (11-6) never trailed and was only tied once early in the first quarter.

“Tonight, we played one of our more complete games. I’m proud of the effort,” Bosarge said.

Offensively, the Vikings were balanced with three players in double figures. Daysha Broughton led the way with 14 points, Ivy Klezmer had 13 points and LoraLee Faulkner added 10 points for MGM. Klezmer played and scored all four quarters and was a force on the defensive end.

“Ivy can play anywhere and step out and guard anybody, she’s a complete player for us,” Bosarge said.

The Warriors (3-5) were led by Taylor Davidson’s 10 points, including a pair of 3-pointers, and Sydney Roossinck added 8 points for Cottage Hill.

Sparkman 66, Albertville 14: The Senators jumped to a 14-3 first-quarter lead and were up 33-8 at the half as they improved to 19-8 overall and 5-0 in Area 7 play on Friday.

Freshman Hanna Horton led Sparkman with 26 points.

Sparkman plays at Huntsville for the area regular-season title.

Enterprise 40, Carroll-Ozark 38: Ameyah Gray scored 15 points and grabbed 9 rebounds in the loss at Enterprise. Taliyah Carter scored 10 points and had 6 rebounds for Carroll.

Foley 48, Daphne 42: Seventh-ranked Foley earned the win at home on Thursday and the top seed in the upcoming Area 2 tournament. Daphne will be the second seed.

La’Merrica Johnson had a double-double for Daphne (15-11). Johnson scored 18 points and grabbed 12 rebounds.

Daphne 49, Fairhope 39: The Trojans picked up the home win on Tuesday. Addison Luker and La’Merrica Johnson scored 16 points each. Johnson claimed 8 rebounds.

Theodore vs Saraland Girls Basketball

CLASS 6A

Theodore 32, Saraland 22: The Theodore girls made an 8-0 run in the third quarter to take the lead for good in Area 1 action on Friday night.

“I knew it was going to be sluggish and slow and they did make us turn the ball over a lot,” Theodore coach Ratassia Worsham said. “I wanted us to be patient on offense.”

The Bobcats improved to 18-7 overall, 5-1 in the area and are set to travel to McGill-Toolen on Tuesday. The Spartans (2-4 in the area) host to East Central of Hurley, Miss., on Tuesday.

Jazmyn Bigham led all scorers with 14 points and added 4 rebounds, 2 steals and a block. Dayzah Weatherly chipped in 8 points. Shakira Williams scored 6 points and had 4 steals for Saraland, which hit only 1-of-6 foul shots on the night.

The Spartans took an early 5-2 lead, but the Bobcats used a 7-0 run to close the first quarter with a 9-5 advantage. Theodore led 15-12 at the break and 24-17 after three quarters of play.

Homewood 55, Parker 42: Homewood used a stifling defense and an 11-2 third-quarter run to avenge a loss to Parker earlier this season.

“We stayed in the zone press. It got us some turnovers, and we just stuck with it,” Patriots head coach Gavin King said. “The girls played really hard, and if you play hard long enough, good will start to happen.”

“We came out with more fire,” steady junior guard Kayla Warren said. “We were smarter, and that helped us play better.”

After Parker narrowed the Patriots’ 10-point lead to 5, Warren went on a personal 5-point run to squash the hopes of the Bison. She hit an open 3-pointer in the corner, stole the inbounds pass and then laid the ball off the backboard for 2 more.

“I was just really fired up after making that one 3 because I had missed a couple in the first half,” she said. “That kind of fired me up.”

“That defense turned into some offense for us when we were struggling to generate some half-court offense,” King added.

Warren led the Patriots with 10 points and freshman Molly Dorough followed her with 9. Warren and Dorough both hit two 3-pointers. Nine players scored for the Patriots. As a team, they hit nine 3-pointers.

“We know we play better when we play together,” Warren said. “It’s not a one-person game. We do everything as a team. That’s what works out for us, so we knew what we had to do”

“At Parker, we had a lot more turnovers than we had tonight. I thought we handled their full-court press really well,” King said. “We made some adjustments on how to get the ball down the court without any turnovers. We had less of those tonight, giving us more possessions.”

Parker’s gritty junior guard Alteona Plump scored a game-high 12 points, and fellow junior guard Makaliah Marshall scored 8 points.

Homewood (21-4) will host Bibb County in a non-region matchup Tuesday, while Parker (17-5) plays at Minor.

CLASS 5A

Marbury 49, Holtville 43: Marbury earned the Area 6 win on the road on Friday, thanks to a first-quarter push that had the visitors up 16-8 with 1:25 left in the period. Holtville outscored Marbury the rest of the way.

Julie Nekolna and Holly Smith registered double-doubles in the losing effort. Nekolna scored 19 points and hauled in 13 rebounds. Holly Smith scored 12 points and also grabbed 13 rebounds for Holtville (22-4).

Carroll 52, Red Level 46: The Eagles improved to 18-6 with the home win over 1A Red Level on Friday. Ameyah Gray notched a double-double with 30 points – 24 in the first half – and 10 rebounds.

Tyazia Newman and Taliyah Carter both had 9 points and 6 rebounds in the win.

CLASS 4A

Prattville Christian 81, Sylacauga 7: Hannah Jones tossed in 21 points and grabbed 7 rebounds as the third-ranked Panthers improved to 24-2.

Avery Rogers scored 18 points and had 5 rebounds. CoCo Thomas scored 14 points and had 4 rebounds for the winners. Kayden Carr had 8 assists and 4 steals and Ally Blankinchip grabbed 6 rebounds and had 5 assists.

PCA will play at Montgomery Academy on Monday.

Priceville 66, Danville 24: The Bulldogs raced to a 17-3 first-quarter lead and carried a 38-13 advantage into halftime on the way to the rout of 3A Danville on the road on Friday.

Leslie Hames scored 19 points for Priceville (16-7) and Lauren Hames had 18 in the win. Leslie Hames had 5 steals. Abby Langlois scored 12 points and grabbed 9 rebounds and had 4 blocked shots for the Bulldogs. Carly Nelson had 6 rebounds.

Adily Alberti led Danville with 10 points.

CLASS 1A

Georgiana 56, McKenzie 15: The Panthers earned the road win, led by Lillie Boggan’s triple-double performance. Boggan, 5-foot-5 sophomore, poured in 19 points, grabbed 10 rebounds and had 12 steals. She also dished out 5 assists for Georgiana (8-12, 5-3 in Area 3).

Nyeshia Thomas turned in a double-double for the winners with 12 points and 11 rebounds. Thomas had 3 blocked shots.

Marion County 59, Danville 55: Marion County rallied in the fourth quarter to edge the Hawks on Saturday at Winfield. After leading 11-8 after one quarter, Danville outscored the Red Raiders 19-11 for a 27-22 halftime advantage. Marion County trailed 45-44 headed into the final quarter.

Lily Robinson and Leiporshia Lipsey led Marion County with 19 points each. Robison hit four of her five 3-pointers in the third quarter while Lipsey scored 8 points in the third. Anna White added 10 points for the Raiders.

Madalyn McCreless scored 16 points to lead Danville. Adily Albert scored 12 points.

AISA

Lakeside 46, Abbeville Christian 35: Jayden Green led the Chiefs to the win on Friday with 16 points, 13 rebounds and 5 steals.

Chloe Helms scored 11 points and had 6 steals in the win. Elizabeth Erickson grabbed 8 rebounds and had 4 steals for Lakeside.

Lakeside (10-9) closes out the regular season on Monday at Macon East.
