South Alabama collapses in 4th quarter, loses 34-30 to Georgia Southern
South Alabama collapsed in the fourth quarter of a 34-30 loss to Georgia Southern on Saturday at Hancock Whitney Stadium.
The Jaguars (4-5, 3-2 Sun Belt Conference) led 30-14 after three quarters before the Eagles (6-3, 4-1) stormed back in the final period. South Alabama also hurt itself with two turnovers and multiple penalties in the final 15 minutes.
South Alabama trailed 14-13 at halftime before scoring 17 straight points in the third quarter to go up by 16. However, Georgia Southern scored a touchdown on the first play of the fourth to get back in the game before dominating the rest of the way.
The Eagles took the lead for good on back-up quarterback Dexter Williams’ 22-yard touchdown pass to Dalen Ward with 8:14 remaining. Starting quarterback JC French led most of the comeback before he was injured early in the fourth quarter.
South Alabama also fumbled a kickoff to set up a Georgia Southern touchdown, and Gio Lopez threw an interception. Back-up quarterback Bishop Davenport then entered the game and drove the Jaguars to the Georgia Southern 23, but was sacked on third and fourth down to end his team’s final chance.
South Alabama lost despite outgaining Georgia Southern 458 yards to 337. The Jaguars were penalized 13 times for 99 yards, continuing a season-long problem.
Kentrel Bullock ran for 101 yards on 17 carries in a losing effort for South Alabama, while Fluff Bothwell ran for two touchdowns. Jamaal Pritchett caught 12 passes for 107 yards, and also recovered a fumble for a touchdown.
Laith Marjan kicked field goals of 41, 35 and 24 yards for the Jaguars. Lopez was 22-for-30 for 257 yards with a touchdown and an interception.
South Alabama has a bye week before playing at Louisiana on Nov. 16.
