Troy runs all over Coastal Carolina to snap FBS losing streak
Troy rushed for 338 yards as a team to spark a 38-24 victory over Coastal Carolina on Saturday at Veterans Memorial Stadium, snapping the Trojans’ 8-game FBS losing streak.
Damien Taylor ran for 190 yards and a touchdown for the Trojans, while Gerald Green added 123 yards and a score on the ground and also caught an 83-yard touchdown pass in the homecoming win. Troy is now 2-7 overall, 1-4 in the Sun Belt Conference.
“It feels great to get a Sun Belt win,” Troy coach Gerad Parker said. “I told some of the guys those feelings were even better than all the other ones in the history of my coaching career because of how good it feels for everybody else.
“This operation needed a win; everybody deserved one and needed it, and that’s as emotional as I’ve been since taking this job. It feels even better because it’s not about me; it’s about the rest of this operation.”
Troy broke the game open with three touchdowns in the second quarter to take a 28-7 halftime lead. Matthew Caldwell threw a 3-yard touchdown pass to Devonte Ross and followed that up with the 83-yarder to Green, then ran for a 1-yard score.
Coastal Carolina (4-4, 1-4) scored 10 straight points in the third quarter to get within 28-17, but Taylor’s 41-yard touchdown run put Troy back up by three scores. The Chanticleers got Ethan Vasko’s 38-yard touchdown pass to Jameson Tucker late in the third to make it 11-point game again, but Scott Taylor Renfroe’s 36-yard field goal was the only scoring of the fourth quarter.
Troy used a 99-yard drive — including a 51-yard run by Green — to score the game’s first points, Green’s 1-yard run with 5:02 left in the opening quarter. After Coastal Carolina blocked a punt deep in Troy territory, Vasko ran in from 11 yards out to tie the game at 7-7 before the Trojans’ dominant second quarter.
Caldwell finished the day 9-for-16 for 169 yards and two touchdowns passing, but Troy ran the ball on 54 of 70 offensive snaps. The Trojans outgained the Chanticleers 507 yards to 313.
Vasko passed for 206 yards and a score for the Chanticleers, while Brayden Bennett had 69 yards rushing — including a 21-yard touchdown. Troy’s defense broke up six of Vasko’s passes, including three by cornerback Demaje Yancey.
The victory snapped a 4-game losing streak overall for Troy, whose only previous win this season came against FCS program Florida A&M. The Trojans’ most-recent FBS victory had been over Appalachian State in last season’s Sun Belt championship game.
Troy has an open date next week before traveling to Georgia Southern on Nov. 16.
