Last-minute rain keeps October from being record dry
October is typically Alabama’s driest month, and it was especially dry for may areas in 2024.
The National Weather Service reported several areas finished the month with no rain. Some of the more populated areas are Anniston and Guntersville.
Other areas did get some last-minute rain Thursday into early morning Friday, and scattered showers will be possible today in parts of north and west Alabama. Eastern and southern areas are expected to remain mostly dry.
Some rainfall amounts from Alabama cities for the month of October:
* Anniston: none
* Birmingham: 0.25 inches (received Oct. 31)
* Dothan: 0.06 inches (Oct. 4 and traces on Oct. 6 and 30)
* Guntersville: none
* Huntsville: 0.53 inches (Oct. 31)
* Jackson: 1.13 inches (Oct. 5)
* Mobile: 0.52 inches (Oct. 4 and traces on Oct. 3, 30 and 31)

After today the next chance for rain is expected to arrive on Tuesday into Wednesday when another cold front attempts to make it into the state. That front is not expected to be a big rainmaker, however.
Here’s the precipitation outlook for the next seven days from NOAA’s Weather Prediction Center:
November could bring more rain than October, however.
The monthly precipitation outlook from NOAA’s Climate Prediction Center suggests Alabama has equal chances of above-average or below-average rainfall over the next 30 days. But at least it’s not favored to be below average.
The CPC’s six- to 10-day precipitation outlook is a little more optimistic and shows slightly higher probabilities of above-average rain from Nov. 6-10:
