Southern Company Thursday reported third-quarter earnings of $1.5 billion for the third quarter of the year, despite catastrophic damage from two hurricanes.

The earnings, at $1.40 per share, were higher than the $1.4 billion the company reported for the same quarter last year.

Through Sept. 30, Southern Company reported earnings of $3.9 billion for the year.
