Running back runs away with Birmingham area Week 10 Player of the Week honors
The Hollis Wright Player of the Week had a big night on the field and a huge finish in the balloting for Week 10.
Braxton Yocom of Oak Grove got 91 percent of the 28,597 votes cast in the weekly survey – 25,998 total – to run away with the top spot. The senior running back ran 15 times for 144 yards, almost a first down on every carry, with a touchdown and scored another TD on a 46-yard pass reception as the Tigers beat Fairfield 35-27 on Thursday.
Oak Grove carries a 7-2 record into its regular-season finale at Hanceville on Friday after finishing 5-2 in Class 4A, Region 4.
Corner sophomore quarterback Keaton Coffee finished second in the voting with 5 percent of the total. He threw for 4 touchdowns as the Yellow Jackets rallied from a 30-7 deficit to beat Carver 31-30 on Friday. He had scoring tosses of 20, 22, 24 and 24 yards and completed 12-of-17 throws for 188 yards. Coffee also ran for 60 yards for Corner (8-1, 5-1 in Class 5A, Region 5).
The Yellow Jackets host Springville to close out regular-season play on Friday.
Parker 6-foot-1, 200-pound defensive end Robert Taylor finished third in the vote with 1 percent of the total. The sophomore had 6 tackles in a 64-0 win over Woodlawn on Thursday with 4 sacks. The No. 2 Class 6A Thundering Herd finished the regular season at 9-1 with a 6-0 Region 5 record and will host a first-round playoff game next week.
