Jacksonville Jaguars add former Alabama high school standout

Waived by the Chicago Bears on Saturday, wide receiver Velus Jones Jr. has returned to the NFL. The Jacksonville Jaguars announced on Tuesday that they had signed the former Saraland High School standout for their practice squad.

A third-round selection from Tennessee in the 2022 NFL Draft, Jones had an 8-yard reception and two carries for 11 yards in Chicago’s season-opening game as he added running-back duties to his role. But he also muffed a kickoff and did not play again before being waived.

In his first two seasons, Jones had 11 receptions for 127 yards and one touchdown, 17 rushing attempts for 154 yards and one touchdown, 38 kickoff returns for a 27.4-yard average and five punt returns for a 7.0-yard average.

Jones was an All-State selection for Saraland in 2014 and 2015. Another All-State selection from Mobile County in those seasons also was involved in an NFL transaction on Tuesday but moving in the opposite direction.

Running back La’Mical Perine, the Alabama Sports Writers Association’s Class 7A Back of the Year for the 2015 season at Theodore High School, was released from the Pittsburgh Steelers’ practice squad.

Perine has not played this season. After spending the first week of the regular season on the Green Bay Packers’ practice squad, Perine had been with the Steelers since Oct. 1. That was a re-signing because Perine spent training camp and the preseason with Pittsburgh before being released in the roster cuts for the regular season.

A fourth-round draft choice from Florida in 2020, Perine has run for 340 yards and two touchdowns on 94 carries and caught 14 passes for 96 yards in 17 regular-season games. He also played in three playoff games for the Kansas City Chiefs on their way to the Super Bowl last season, although he did not play in the NFL championship game.
