A few strong storms possible Sunday in parts of Alabama
If you’re in south Alabama keep an eye out for a few severe storms later today.
NOAA’s Storm Prediction Center has Alabama’s most southern counties under Level 1 out of 5 risk for severe weather today, mainly this afternoon into tonight.
It’s a low-end risk, but a tornado will be possible, as well as damaging winds, according to the National Weather Service.
The weather service in Mobile said the most likely time for storms will be from 1 p.m. Sunday until around 9 p.m.
For those in southeast Alabama, the weather service in Tallahassee, Fla., says Sunday afternoon into Sunday night will be the time period to watch.
The rest of Alabama is not expected to see strong storms, but there will be rain in the picture today. The weather service expects the heaviest rain to fall on areas generally south of the Interstate 20 corridor.
Some areas in south Alabama could get up to 3 inches of rain before Monday is over.
Here is a look at projected rainfall totals through Monday from the weather service.
Rain will be possible throughout the day, but look for higher chances this afternoon and into the evening hours, according to forecasters.
Some localized flooding could be possible in areas that get socked with repeated rain showers. This is the execessive rainfall outlook from the Weather Prediction Center for Sunday. The areas in yellow have a Level 2 out of 4 risk for flash flooding through today. The areas in green have a Level 1 risk.
Rain will be possible off and on throughout the week, and the weather service is watching closely in case flooding becomes an issue later this week.
So far Alabama is not expected to have to deal with any more severe weather this week, but forecasters will be keeping an eye on Thursday’s forecast, when another system could bring the potential for storms — and possibly more heavy rain.
