AD Greg Byrne evaluates Alabama football discipline under Kalen DeBoer

Alabama athletics director Greg Byrne said he’s tried to only read two articles a week about Alabama football, win or lose.

He has seen some headlines, though. One was about the discipline in the football program under new coach Kalen DeBoer; Byrne joined The Paul Finebaum Show on SEC Network on Friday and addressed that subject.

“Have we got some penalties? Sure,” Byrne said. “We’re working at it every single day to get better.”

Then Byrne provided an example. On Monday, he was at the indoor football facility getting an “old man workout” in at 6 a.m.

He said an unnamed player was “doing some extra work based off a bad decision from Saturday.”

“Are we going to tweet about that or put a video out about that? No,“ Byrne said. ”But I’m really impressed from an accountability standpoint, from a discipline and structure standpoint. We’re not going backwards there.”

DeBoer and his program have fielded plenty of scrutiny of late, losing two games the past three weeks. It marks the first time Alabama has lost two games before November since 2007, Nick Saban’s first season.

Alabama is one of the most penalized teams in the country; The fifth-most in total penalties heading into this weekend at 133. That’s an average of 8.86 penalties per game. Penalties were also a problem at times the last couple seasons, too.

“I believe that (DeBoer) absolutely is focused on discipline and structure,” Byrne said. “I’ve seen it. They’re coaching to get better every single week. There are teams we’ve had in the past that have struggled different times of the year and gotten better. I have full confidence that we’re going to continue to get better every single week.”

No. 15 Alabama will face No. 21 Missouri on Saturday (2:45 p.m. CT, ABC) at Bryant-Denny Stadium.
