Theft from Mountain Brook mail drop box leads to police chase, 2 arrests

Two suspects are in custody after an hours-long search following a theft from a U.S. Postal Service drop box in Mountain Brook.

Officers were dispatched at 5:04 a.m. Tuesday to the reported drop box theft in Office Park off U.S. 280. They arrived to find two men in a vehicle and confronted them.

The suspects, police said, fled and a car chase ensued. The pursuit ended in the 2700 block of Rockhill Road when then two suspects bailed from the vehicle and ran away.

One suspect was taken into custody at 8:37 a.m. near that location.

As the search and investigation continued throughout the day, officers received reports of an individual matching the second suspect’s description near Grants Mill Road and Interstate 459.

Mountain Brook officers and U.S. Postal Inspectors responded with Irondale police and took the second suspect into custody at 2:20 p.m.

The suspects names are being withheld pending formal charges.
