Gunfire in north Birmingham neighborhood leaves 1 dead
Gunfire erupted in a northern Birmingham neighborhood Saturday night, leaving one person dead.
About 9:30 p.m., North Precinct officers were dispatched to the 3400 block of 31st Avenue North on a report of a person shot, said Officers Truman Fitzgerald.
Officers arrived on the scene and found an adult male victim unresponsive in the roadway. Birmingham Fire and Rescue Service arrived and pronounced the victim dead on the scene.
His name has not yet been released.
Fitzgerald said investigators believe the victim was hanging out in the area with other people when the unidentified suspect began firing shots at the group. That’s when the victim was struck.
It wasn’t immediately clear whether the shooter was in a vehicle or on foot. Only a few shell casings were observed at the scene.
Based on the evidence so far, it didn’t immediately appear that the victim was specifically targeted, but the investigation is in its early stages.
Several dozen people gathered at the crime scene which is in the Collegeville area.
The victim is Birmingham’s eighth homicide this year. Of those, one has been ruled justifiable and therefore not deemed criminal.
