Jameson Williams facing another NFL suspension, report says

Detroit Lions wide receiver Jameson Williams will be suspended two games by the NFL for violating the league’s Policy on Performance-Enhancing Substances, ESPN has reported.

The ESPN report did not cite the specific violation that led to the disciplinary action, which has not been announced by the NFL.

The NFL Policy on Performance-Enhancing Substances says a player can be suspended for two games for a first violation of testing positive for a prohibited stimulant, diuretic or masking agent; attempting to substitute, dilute or adulterate a specimen; or manipulating a test result.

During his weekly appearance on WXYT-FM in Detroit on Tuesday morning, Detroit coach Dan Campbell was asked about the report.

“I can‘t really say anything about it,” Campbell said. “Until the league gives judgment and it comes out on their end, I’m not supposed to really comment on it. All I can tell you is we‘re prepared to not have him, and we‘ll be fine. That‘s why we’ve got (Kalif Raymond) and (Amon-Ra St. Brown) and (Sam) LaPorta and (Tim Patrick) and Allen Robinson, among other things, with David Montgomery, (Jahmyr) Gibbs, so we‘ll be fine. We‘ll move on. When this thing comes down, if it does, when it comes down, we’ll be fine.”

Williams was suspended last season for violating the NFL’s gambling policy by betting on non-league games via mobile device while at a team facility. Originally a six-game suspension to start the 2023 season, Williams’ punishment was reduced to four games when the NFL changed the suspension length for his infraction to two games while he was serving the punishment.

This season, Williams has 17 receptions for 361 yards with three touchdowns and four rushing attempts for 32 yards as Detroit has compiled a 5-1 record.

Entering the season, Williams had 25 receptions for 395 yards and three touchdowns and four rushing attempts for 69 yards and one touchdown in 18 regular-season games since he joined the Lions from Alabama in the first round of the 2022 NFL Draft.

Williams caught 79 passes for 1,572 yards and 15 touchdowns and averaged 35.2 yards and scored two touchdowns on 10 kickoff returns during his only season for Alabama in 2021. The Associated Press and The Sporting News selected Williams as a first-team All-American.

The Lions traded the 32nd, 34th and 66th selections in the 2022 NFL Draft to the Minnesota Vikings to obtain Williams with the 12th choice even though they knew his rookie season would be delayed. Williams sustained a torn anterior cruciate ligament in the CFP national-championship contest for the 2021 season. He wasn’t able to practice with his NFL teammates until Nov. 21, 2022, made his debut on Dec. 4, 2022, and played in six games as a rookie.

The NFL announced Williams’ gambling suspension on April 21, 2023.

The Lions play the Tennessee Titans on Sunday and the Green Bay Packers on Nov. 3 in their next two games.
