This Alabama rollercoaster is up for auction: Bids start at $8,000

If you’re willing to pay at least $8,000, you can purchase your very own rollercoaster from the city of Tuscumbia.

The Python Pit kiddie coaster is 12 ft. tall at its highest point, according to its listing on auction site GovDeals. It once operated in Tuscumbia’s Spring Park, but hasn’t run since 2021.

While it is currently non-operational, it should only require three phase power and a small air compressor to run, the listing says. The city adds that the coaster “operated as it should when it was last run.”

Since its posting on GovDeals late last week, the coaster has received four bids. The current highest bid sits at $2,000.

Tuscumbia Mayor William Foster told the Times Daily that the city will not accept any bids below $8,000. Bidding ends at 2:45 p.m. on Halloween day, according to GovDeals.

Once purchased, the buyer will have ten days to disassemble the coaster at Spring Park and remove it for pickup. Beyond that, the city will begin charging a $10 daily storage fee.

Foster told the Times Daily that a few Tuscumbia grandparents had expressed interest in buying the Python Pit for their grandkids.

“Imagine being a kid and you get an invite to a buddy’s birthday party, and he had a rollercoaster in his backyard,” he said. “That would be incredible.”

Foster told Huntsville’s WAFF 48 that he plans to ask the city council to start planning for a new playground at the site of the coaster once it’s gone.
