Woman who allegedly shot parents, fled with her children, captured by Mobile police

A 36-year-old woman on Sunday night allegedly shot her parents, killing her father and seriously injuring her mother, and then fled with her two young children, Mobile police say.

Charity Matthews is in custody, police announced shortly before 5:30 a.m. Monday.

On Sunday night, at approximately 7:47 p.m. in the 1400 block of Avonlea Court, police were called to investigate a shooting.

Police found Matthews’ father dead and her mother suffering serious injuries.

Early Monday morning, police found Matthews at a local hotel.

“A joint effort amongst our Homicide Unit, Cyber Intelligence Unit, Tactical Intelligence Unit, SWAT, Drone Team, K-9, Patrol Unit and our Identification Unit made it possible to apprehend Matthews without incident,” police statement read. “Both children were found safe.”

Court records state Matthews has an 11-year-old son and 5-year-old daughter.

Matthews is also a suspect in another shooting that happened Saturday in the 2100 block of Height Street.

“The male victim in this case was transported to a local hospital with non-life-threatening injuries. This remains an active investigation and no further information is available at this time,” a police statement read.
