Steelers change QBs, but Quinnen Williams out to stop Najee Harris
Coming off their highest-scoring game of the season, the Pittsburgh Steelers are changing quarterbacks. Russell Wilson will make his debut with the team in his 13th NFL season on Sunday night, when the Steelers play the New York Jets.
Justin Fields handled the quarterback duties as Pittsburgh won four of its first six games in the 2024 season. But Wilson is off the Steelers’ injury report for the first time this season, and the nine-time Pro Bowler is set to make his 189th regular-season start.
“We’ve got to execute the game plan,” Pittsburgh running back Najee Harris told reporters on Thursday. “You guys focus so much on one player. It’s all 11 of us. You guys worry about the quarterback, but I’m worried about all 11 — the quarterback and the line and the receivers and the running back. Russ being out there, he’s got to do the same thing that Justin’s been doing. Justin’s been doing a great job for us. This is the best start I think I had throughout my years being here.”
Fields said if he had played better during his six games, he might have been able to hold on to the quarterback spot.
“I saw some comments that Justin said about him not doing the best that he can,” Harris said, “but I think that he did the best he possibly can. I think he did a really good job. I know what he’s trying to do. Just me saying publicly that we’re all proud of him. Don’t be so hard on yourself. We got your back. I got your back. I think that all 11 of us got to pitch in and be in there because we need both of them, for sure.”
Pittsburgh defeated the Las Vegas Raiders 32-13 last week, even though Fields threw for only 145 yards with no touchdowns. But the Steelers ran for 183 yards, with Harris going for 106 yards and one touchdown on 14 carries.
The Jets have a 2-4 record and fired coach Robert Saleh after five games. Defensive coordinator Jeff Ulbrich became the interim coach and started with a 23-20 loss to Buffalo Bills on Monday night. The Bills ran for 149 yards, the fourth time this season that New York yielded at least 125 rushing yards.
Jets defensive tackle Quinnen Williams said the New York defensive linemen need to start “being play-makers instead of place-holders.”
“They run the ball very well,” Williams said about the Steelers, “and we haven’t been stopping the run lately at a high level.”
In 2018, when Quinnen Williams won the Outland Trophy as the nation’s best lineman and earned unanimous All-American recognition at Alabama, Harris was one of the five future NFL running backs who carried the ball for the Crimson Tide that season, along with Damien Harris, Josh Jacobs, Brian Robinson Jr. and Jerome Ford.
Harris was the No. 2 rusher with 783 yards and four touchdowns on 117 carries. The next two seasons, after Williams departed as the No. 3 selection in the 2019 NFL Draft, Harris ran for 2,670 yards and 39 touchdowns on 460 carries for Alabama.
“He’s an amazing running back,” Williams said. “The same person he is now was the same person he was in college, and the things he do now, he did in college – the stiff-arm, the jumping over people, the running over people. Just the talent he has is unbelievable.”
The Steelers and Jets kick off at 7:20 p.m. CDT Sunday at Acrisure Stadium in Pittsburgh. NBC will televise the game.
