Two tropical storms possible today in the Atlantic

There’s a new tropical storm in the Caribbean, and there could be another one later today near the Bahamas, according to forecasters.

The National Hurricane Center said Tropical Storm Nadine formed early Saturday morning just east of Belize in the western Caribbean.

It’s poised to make landfall later this morning or early this afternoon along the coast of Belize, where a tropical storm warning is in effect.

Forecasters also continued to watch another disturbance near the southeastern Bahamas. The hurricane center said it was looking more organized and could become a tropical depression or Tropical Storm Oscar as soon as later today. It is forecast to track westward toward the Bahamas and eastern Cuba.

TROPICAL STORM NADINE

Nadine was a minimal tropical storm with 45 mph winds on Saturday morning, according to the hurricane center. Forecasters said Nadine could strengthen some before it moves onshore later today.

As of 7 a.m. CDT Saturday, the center of Tropical Storm Nadine was located about 60 miles east of Belize City and was tracking to the west at 9 mph.

The storm could bring 4 to 8 inches of rain to parts of Belize, Guatemala and southern Mexico through the weekend, which has raised concerns about flash flooding.

The storm is expected to move inland today and weaken. It could dissipate over southeastern Mexico by tomorrow, forecasters said.

POSSIBLE TROPICAL STORM OSCAR?

Nadine is the only named storm in the Atlantic Basin as of Saturday morning, but that could change soon.

The hurricane center also continued to watch a disturbance near the southeastern Bahamas. Forecasters said that it was looking more organized and had an associated area of low pressure. The hurricane center said there were also signs that a defined center of circulation could be developing.

Forecasters said if those trends continue a tropical depression or storm could form as soon as later today as it tracks to the west at 10-15 mph.

The hurricane center said the system should pass north of Hispaniola today. It could be near the southeastern Bahamas and extreme eastern Cuba by Sunday.

Forecasters said people in those areas should keep an eye on the forecast over the next few days.

The Atlantic hurricane season still has more than a month left. The last day of the season will be Nov. 30.
