Chicken recall: 10 million pounds of meat from Walmart, Aldi, more recalled over listeria concerns

Millions of pounds of ready-to-eat chicken and turkey products sold at places like Aldi, Kroger, Trade Joe’s and Walmart, have been recalled due to possible listeria contamination.

Recalled foods are from pre-cooked meat producer Bruce Pac and include 9,986 pounds of ready-to-eat meat products, according to the U.S. Department of Agriculture’s Food Safety and Inspection Service.

The products were produced from June 19-Oct. 8 and were shipped nationwide at retailers such as Aldi, Giant Eagle, HEB, Kroger, Target, Trader Joe’s and Target under brand names such as Amazon Fresh, Atkins, Boston Market, Dole, Jenny Craig, Michelina’s, Rao’s and Signature Select. Recalled products have the establishment numbers “51205 or P-51205″ on the USDA mark of inspection.

Products include chicken-based wraps, sandwiches, burritos, pastas and salads.

Listeria monocytogenes, the bacteria that causes listeria infections, was discovered during routine testing of the products. The source of the bacteria was traced back to BrucePac’s ready-to-eat chicken though there have been no confirmed reports of adverse reactions traced to the foods.

Symptoms of listeria infection

Listeriosis can cause diarrhea, gastrointestinal issues, fever, muscle aches, headache, stiff neck, confusion, loss of balance and convulsions. It can be particularly dangerous for pregnant women and can cause miscarriages, stillbirths, premature delivery or life-threatening infections of a newborn. It can also cause serious and sometimes fatal infections in adults and people with weakened immune symptoms.

People with the products should discard them or return to the place of purchase, USDA said.
