Country music legend to headline Mobile’s MoonPie Drop festivities

Mobile’s New Year’s Eve festivities will have a little twang this year, thanks to the booking of a bona fide country music superstar as headliner.

Organizers of the annual MoonPie Over Mobile celebration revealed Tuesday morning that Clint Black will headline the event. Black exploded onto the country music scene in 1989, with his debut album “Killin’ Time” producing a string of classic No. 1 singles including “Walkin’ Away” and “A Better Man.” He racked up more than a dozen No. 1 singles over the course of the next decade. He has won numerous industry awards including a Grammy for the song “Same Old Train.”

“Clint Black is the man” said former councilman Fred Richardson, an early backer of Mobile’s MoonPie Drop. “Get ready. You might need to bring your seat belt.”

It has been a while since the event had a country headliner. New Orleans star Trombone Shorty & Orleans Avenue headlined at the end of 2021, followed by rock band Third Eye Blind in 2022 and a lineup of classic hip-hop acts including Big Daddy Kane and Slick Rick in 2023.

Richardson said the festivities ringing in 2025 also will feature the Jukebox Brass Band and southwest Alabama-based singer-songwriter Grayson Capps.

The free festivities will feature a Kids’ Zone in Mardi Gras Park from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. Tuesday, Dec. 31, with a second-line parade and a MoonPie Drop for kids at noon. Evening festivities include the carving of the world’s largest edible MoonPie and a second-line parade leading to the main stage where the night’s acts will perform.
