Alabama Republican Party leader named vice chair for national GOP

Alabama Republican Party Chair John Wahl was picked as a vice chair for the Republican National Committee during the RNC’s winter meeting in Dana Point, Calif., on Friday.

The RNC selects its vice chairs by region. Wahl will lead the southern region.

“I believe the RNC needs a fresh vision for the 2024 election cycle, and I look forward to being part of a team working towards that goal,” Wahl said in a post on the Alabama Republican Party’s Facebook page.

Wahl was elected chair of the Alabama GOP in February 2021.

Republicans maintained their dominance in Alabama in the 2022 election cycle, sweeping statewide races and maintaining their hold on almost three-fourths of the seats in the Legislature.

“I hope the lessons we’ve learned from our election successes here in Alabama will be helpful as we get ready for 2024,” Wahl said.

The RNC elected Vicki Drummond of the Alabama Republican Party as RNC secretary.

In the most high-profile race, the RNC reelected Ronna McDaniel as party chair in a hard-fought battle for the top spot. The Alabama Republican Party’s steering committee voted earlier this month to oppose McDaniel’s reelection, passing a resolution saying the RNC needed new leadership.
