“Portrait,” released, Oct. 11, is a follow-up to her 2022 breakout sophomore album “Linger Awhile.” Jazzwize describes the album as a “snapshot of the 24-year-old Bronx native’s growth not only as a once-in-a-generation vocalist but also as songwriter, arranger and band leader.”

The fall and winter leg of Joy’s tour is a run throughout the South. The dates include multiple shows in Florida, as well as stops in South Carolina (The Brooks Center for the Performing Arts in Clemson on Oct. 15) Alabama ( The Alys Stephens Center in Birmingham on Oct. 17), and Georgia (The University of Georgia Performing Arts Center in Athens on Oct. 18).

Here’s what they’re saying about “Portrait”:

“With her new album, Portrait — following her 2022 breakout album Linger Awhile — Joy finds creative freedom in bringing her unique lyrical perspective to timeless standards, being sure to choose tunes that have largely gone overlooked. This is in addition to original works, all birthed over the course of three days at the legendary Rudy Van Gelder studio in New Jersey.” – VIBE

“Co-produced by Joy and veteran trumpeter/bandleader and multi-Grammy winner Brian Lynch, the 8-song collection showcases a synergistic approach to arranging and the intimate, soulful chemistry she’s developed with her touring band, an egalitarian octet featuring trumpeter Jason Charos, trombonist Donavan Austin, saxophonists David Mason and Kendric McCallister, pianist Connor Rohrer, bassist Felix Moseholm and drummer Evan Sherman. Joy’s role in the ensemble is multifaceted, balancing her prominence as a vocalist with her contributions as a musical collaborator.” – Jazzwize

“Portrait documents the immersive, seemingly telepathic rapport she’s developed with her touring band, which includes musicians she learned the jazz craft alongside while earning her undergraduate degree; in fact, it wasn’t until college that Joy began to pursue jazz singing. On the strength of that cozy dynamic — on the road, “I’m among friends, which explains personal chemistry that translates to our live performances,” Joy says. The vocalist offers an album that both honors jazz heritage while staking out bold, singular territory. Whatever a rote, singer-with-sidemen record is, Portrait is not.” –WGBO
