Live updates: Kalen DeBoer, Alabama coaches preview Tennessee

No. 7 Alabama football will turn its attention to No. 11 Tennessee this week.

Crimson Tide coach Kalen DeBoer will get his first experience in the Third Saturday in October rivalry. That will include him coaching against Vols coach Josh Heupel, a fellow South Dakota native.

Both teams have had similar games the past two weeks. Each lost to an unranked opponent on Oct. 6 before barely beating another unranked team on Oct. 12.

Before the matchup at Neyland Stadium in Knoxville, Tennessee, DeBoer, defensive coordinator Kane Wommack and offensive coordinator are set to hold their weekly press conferences starting at about 11:30 a.m. CT. Follow along for live updates.

Live updates: Kalen DeBoer press conference, plus Kane Wommack and Nick Sheridan

Nick Sheridan, offensive coordinator

— On Jalen Milroe facing pressure and his decision making: “I think Jalen has responded great in those moments. There’s always going to be plays you wish you could do something different.” Sheridan said there are plays Alabama can learn from.

— “There’s always a story to every poor decision and every mistake that you make.”

— The passion and intensity of the game stands out the most about the Alabama-Tennessee rivalry to Nick Sheridan, who was a Tennessee graduate assistant about a decade ago.

— The depth of the receiver room has helped Alabama, Sheridan said. “Coach Shep is doing a great job of mentoring, molding, coaching.”

— Sheridan on the run game: “I wouldn’t probably ever use the word pleased in any area. We’re always trying to improve. We took strides running the ball this week. We had some negative yardage plays that skewed the numbers.” Sheridan said across the board, Alabama is looking for consistency in all areas.

— “I thought there was some physicality up front” as well as some tough running.

— On protection of Milroe: Sheridan said some of the issues were more schematic than on individuals. “It wasn’t perfect. There were certainly a few plays those guys would like back.” But by and large, Sheridan seemed to like the protection from the offensive line.

— Sheridan on the Tennessee defense: He sees size, athleticism and depth up front. “They’re excellent and have been very productive.” He thinks Tennessee defense has been outstanding in some critical moments.

Kane Wommack, defensive coordinator

— Pleased to get the win and find a way against South Carolina. “Special to find a way to get an interception to win the game.”

— “There’s certainly an urgency to continue to build and grow as a football team.”

— Wommack highlighted grabbing four takeaways and how key that was.

— Wommack saw some different wrinkles from South Carolina that the Gamecocks hadn’t shown before, specifically with 12 personnel in the run game.

— Wommack on the fourth-and-9 called the touchdown allowed an “unacceptable play.”

— Wommack said if Alabama wants to be the defense it is capable of being, it needs to have more consistency in executing on third down.

— Wommack thought Alabama took some steps in the right direction from a pass rush standpoint. “We’re still not optimizing our ability to rush as a unit on a consistent basis.”

— Wommack said he thinks Tennessee running back Dylan Sampson is elite.

— Wommack said the key will be consistency on Saturday. “Looking forward to the competition.”

— Wommack on Alabama’s tackling: “There’s a fine line there of trying to create takeaways. The first man to the ball needs to make sure he is securing the tackle.” The second man has the job of trying to get the ball out. “We’ve got to continue to harp on the fundamentals” of tackling.

— Wommack thinks Alabama has been inconsistent from a tackling standpoint.

— “Teams like Tennessee are going to force you to make space tackles.”

— Wommack said USF and Tennessee have the same offensive system, but there are certainly differences in the two and their identities.

— Wommack said it doesn’t matter what Alabama calls if it can’t be executed to consistency.

— Wommack on the cornerback depth with Domani Jackson out of part of the USC game: “For those guys, I thought it was good for them to get in there and get some quality reps.” Wommack highlighted Jaylen Mbakwe stepped up big.
