99 weeks of NFL touchdowns: Alabama alumni on verge of triple-digit scoring streak
Something odd happened in Week 4 of the NFL’s 2019 season: None of the league’s 65 touchdown scorers that week had played at Alabama.
That ended a streak of 32 weeks of regular-season play in which a former Alabama player had scored a touchdown in the NFL and came after Crimson Tide alumni had scored 23 touchdowns in the first three weeks of the 2019 season.
What makes Week 4 of the NFL’s 2019 season particularly noteworthy, though, is a former Alabama player has scored a touchdown in every week of league regular-season play since, and if one finds the end zone this week, Crimson Tide alumni will have a 100-week scoring streak in the NFL.
So far in that streak, 44 former Alabama players have scored touchdowns, and they’ve combined for 549 of them.
Alabama’s streak is the third-longest of the NFL’s AFC/NFC era, behind a 149-week streak by former Miami (Fla.) players that began in Week 15 of the 2002 season and ended in Week 11 of the 2011 season and a 111-week streak by former Oklahoma players that began in Week 10 of the 2018 season.
Miami’s streak featured seven players who scored at least 50 touchdowns – Reggie Wayne, Willis McGahee, Clinton Portis, Santana Moss, Frank Gore, Andre Johnson and Edgerrin James.
Joe Mixon, Jalen Hurts, Mark Andrews, CeeDee Lamb and Kyler Murray have anchored the Oklahoma streak.
Because he played three seasons at Alabama and one at Oklahoma, Hurts counts for both programs, and he’s been among the NFL’s top touchdown scorers during the concurrent streaks.
Alabama has plenty of candidates to extend its streak to 100 weeks by the conclusion of the Monday night game. Eight NFL players have scored at least 13 touchdowns this season, and four played at Alabama – Hurts, who is the Philadelphia Eagles quarterback; Tennessee Titans running back Derrick Henry, Detroit Lions running back Jahmyr Gibbs and Green Bay Packers running back Josh Jacobs. In all, 18 former Alabama players have scored 102 touchdowns during the 2024 season.
There are three weeks remaining on the regular-season schedule for the former Alabama players to overtake the school record for NFL touchdowns in a season. In 2023, 18 former Alabama players scored 106 touchdowns.
The most former Alabama players who have scored touchdowns in one season are 20 in 2019, 2020 and 2021.
