82-year-old woman killed when car plunged from Grandview Medical Center parking deck identified
Authorities have released the name of an elderly Hoover woman who was killed when her vehicle went off the fifth floor of a parking deck at Grandview Medical Center.
The Jefferson County Coroner’s Office identified the woman as Janette Daniels Johnson. She was 82.
Birmingham Fire and Rescue Service and Rocky Ridge Fire were dispatched just before 8:30 a.m. to the hospital. The location where the incident happened is the staff entrance parking lot.
When crews arrived, they found the silver, four-door sedan on its roof.
Firefighters immediately began to try to extricate Johnson, but once they were able to get to her and realized she was dead, they stopped to await the arrival of the Jefferson County Coroner’s Office.
Chief Deputy Coroner Bill Yates said Johnson was pronounced dead on the scene at 8:47 a.m.
Birmingham Fire and Rescue Service Battalion Chief Clay Hendon said there was one witness to the crash.
Birmingham police are investigating the cause.
“More times than not, usually the guide cables will catch them,’’ Hendon said. “I don’t know the speed she was traveling, but this time they didn’t stop her, and she was able to come off the deck.”
