8-year-old girl shot multiple times in crossfire of Birmingham shootout, police say
An 8-year-old girl was shot several times when at least 70 rounds were fired in Birmingham’s Gate City community Sunday night.
The girl was one of two children shot in Birmingham Sunday. An 11-year-old boy was seriously injured in a shooting that also wounded his father on the city’s westside.
Birmingham police about 9 p.m. began receiving multiple Shot Spotter alerts from Marks Village public housing community. .
Those shots included nine rounds fired at 68th Street and Kimberly Avenue, 16 rounds at 67th Street and Joppa Avenue, three rounds at 68th Street and Oporto-Madrid Boulevard, four rounds at 68th Street and Joppa Avenue, 20 rounds at 67th Street and Kimberly Avenue, and nine rounds in the 400 block of Interlaken Court.
Officer Truman Fitzgerald said officers learned the girl had shown up by private vehicle at Birmingham Fire and Rescue Service Station 12 on First Avenue North.
She was taken to Children’s of Alabama, according to police and fire officials.
A woman was also found injured in Gate City, but police believe she hurt her knee running from the gunfire.
Fitzgerald said the young victim is expected to survive but said she was shot at least twice.
According to the initial dispatch of the shooting, the child was shot in the head, but Fitzgerald did not confirm the location of her wounds.
Investigators believe a shootout was taking place when the 8-year-old was caught in the crossfire while in a vehicle with one of her parents. No one in the vehicle was involved in the shootout, Fitzgerald said.
Fitzgerald 60 to 70 people were gathered outside in the public housing community at numerous Mother’s Day or family gatherings.
”We have a suspect or suspects who chose to fire up to 70 rounds with this many people around,’’ he said.
Fitzgerald described the scene as traumatic for many.
“Pure panic,’’ he said. “Anytime you have that many rounds fired, bullets do not have a name.”
“People were just trying not to be a victim themselves,’’ he said. “We are blessed that we have not lost anyone when you have this many rounds fired in such a crowded area.”
“We’ve got multiple officers here from different precincts to help us out with crowd control and to help preserve the scene,’’ he said.
No arrests have been made.
Police are asking anyone with information to come forward.
“Give us whatever you have, whatever you find out,’’ Fitzgerald said. “Again, this 8-year-old depends on your information.”
The little girl is the second child shot in Birmingham on Mother’s Day.
Earlier Sunday, an 11-year-old boy and his father were wounded when someone opened fire on them on the city’s west side. Police said at least 25 rounds were fired in that targeted attack.
Though seriously injured, both father and son are expected to survive.
“Your information is key to getting these people responsible for shooting these babies off our streets,’’ he said.
Anyone with information is asked to call Birmingham police at 205-254-1764 or Crime Stoppers at 205-254-7777.
