8-year-old Alabaster child killed in crash on I-65

An 8-year-old was killed in a Sunday-night crash in Chilton County.

The wreck happened at 6:40 p.m. on Interstate 65 about one mile south of Clanton, said Alabama State Trooper Sgt. Jeremy Burkett.

Troopers do not release the identity of juvenile victims, but Burkett said the child lived in Alabaster.

The young victim was a passenger in a 2010 Chevrolet Silverado that hit a Mitsubishi Mirage in the rear. The child was taken to the hospital and pronounced dead a short time later.

The driver of the Silverado, 33-year-old Reginald E. Jones, also of Alabaster, was taken to UAB Hospital. A 16-year-old passenger was also hospitalized. The severity of their injuries was not disclosed.

Authorities did not announce any injuries to the 38-year-old driver of the Mirage.

The investigation is ongoing.
